Hi all, I am now back with my ideal choices of headsets to choose from but I need some help for my final decision!

The sound card and headsets I chose bellow are 100% for gaming.

First of all in terms of Sound card I chose this: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SC-017-AS

Hopefully that passes the approval :D

This morning I was extremely close to buying the Razer Tiamat 7.1 but my mate is bugging me to seriously consider the Sennheiser G4ME One's.

Like I said they are both purely for gaming and what one will you guys choose from? And hopefully that sound card goes well together with the headsets.

I found the Tiamat's £50 cheaper than the Sennheiser's some where else but not considering the price difference what will be the clear winner or if you guys can recommend a better headset for best bang for buck I will appreciate that :D

Thanks!

For the love of everything that mankind has ever made, do not get the Tiamats.

They are one of the worst sounding headphones I've ever tried. More drivers =/= better sound or positional accuracy. Also just imagine how poor the quality of each driver must be for it to reach it's profit margins.

Any decent stereo headphone coupled with suitable surround sound dsp (dolby headphone, CMSS-3D, Razer surround) will give you a much better experience. If you absolutely need a headset, the G4ME range isn't a bad option.

Having a true 7.1 surround setup with 8 distinct speakers is the way to go - ONLY IF YOU ARE USING SPEAKERS.

You get real audio cues and the effect can be astonishing. However, there is a major drawback when it comes to headphones, in that the speakers need to be as close to your ear canals as possible. This makes multi-speaker headphones a real problem because they all need to fit into just two rather small cups and none of the speakers can be positioned or sized optimally.

You are better off with decent stereo headphones or a good stereo headset (like the Sennheisers) and let either the game or your sound card's DSP provide the virtual surround sound.

So my vote goes to the Sennheisers

^+1.5

True - I wrongly assumed he was deciding between the Tiamats and the G4ME Ones, I missed the recommendations bit.

Thanks for all the feedback.

Did not know the Tiamat's were that bad! I did read many negative reviews on the headset and originally thought it was just a handful of people using it plugged into their on board audio and not with a sound card.

I really do like the Sennheiser G4me one's but the price of £189 is killing me a bit :( But the reviews on these headsets are outstanding!

The Kingston Hyperx Cloud caught my eye after reading a thread on these forums with Twst testing them and the thread mentioning they are better than most headsets in the sub £100 category. Would be nice to spend £60 on the Hyperx instead of £189 on the One's.

I do question myself if the G4me one's might be too much of an overkill for my needs [wow and bf4] and maybe the Hyperx will suit me just fine.

It's not even that they are overkill it's that they are overpriced. The Hyper X Cloud comes with tons of accessories and does a similar job and offers a choice of two sound signatures with the other pads.

If you are paying that much money get either a bargain(HXC)
or a hifi giant K701/K707 or K612 which are the best gaming headphones around IMO.

Twst I think now is a good time to ask you about the Hyperx Cloud. After your testing of the Hyperx Cloud will you say the price difference between the hyperx and Sennhensier G4me one's are worth it purely for gaming? Will paying extra for the One's 100% worth it?

This will help put my head to rest :D

I have heard about the k612 great reviews but something about the clip on mic I dont like I will rather have it all equiped. Dont ask I am weird with my ocd lol xD

But thanks for the suggestion on the Hyperx Cloud. Thats where I am heading now by the looks of it lol. For the price and what you get its outstanding!

You can't go wrong with the hyper X cloud even Linus added it to Stuff that Does suck :D

I think he said If you're in the market for a new headset there is no other option for the money.

The G4me ones are very good. I can compare them to the clouds I'd say they are better than the clouds but I compare them to my X1's and I prefer the X1's obviously the G$ME ones are gaming focussed and they are lower on the bass as a result.

I do think the G4ME ones could be £30/40 cheaper but the noise cancelling microphone is a good bit of kit.

The difference in price is £120 They are not £120 better.

you could buy a pair of clouds for gaming and have change for a pair of HD558 or DT770

Fair enough, OCD has it's ways. Sadly getting the mic equipped really limits your possibilities. What sort of gaming are you looking for? Is it purely competitive or are you looking for a headphone that can give you that wide open space and immersion or both?

Thanks to all above for the advice.

The headphone I am looking for is just for pure gaming and nothing else but gaming :) I love pure quality sound when running around the bf4 maps hearing everything to the sharpest detail.

Not to mention I will be playing the new AC Unity so that open world will feel beautiful on a quality headset and sound card.

I don't mind spending £180 on the sennheinsers as I have learnt to realise that headsets are there for many many years unlike GPU'S I upgrade every year to the latest platform which usually costs me 400+ a card :D

So far I have ordered the Asus Phoebus 7.1 sound card and just giving myself a day or two to make a decision on what headset :D

Then the Sennheisers won't give you that. In fact, apart from the HD800 Sennheiser are not detailed headphones they are more warm, thick sounding with a sliced top end. 598s are thin in the lows but have warm, cloudy mids. GZ are not detailed and lack that treble Articulation, aireyness that you find on a headphone that tends to be wide open.

Being a gamer, I want headphones to try match open spaces. I'm an open world lover. I like to hear wind, rain the relaxing sound of a Small stream or lake in the country and hearing the sound of wildlife. That for me is what I look for in terms of audio and gaming immersion.

You need a certain type of headphone to appreciate the beauty in the game. The Game zero and many others mention are laughable in that area. I don't know why you seem to fixated on the GZ but they are really poor in this area. The HyperX cloud also doesn't perform to the level I wAnt but price restricts it and for the price it's really good but it's too closed in for your needs.

Buying a headphone isn't about just getting one because of reviews. It's about matching them up to your needs. People love Dubstep so you will find a lot of dub fans giving the Beats Studio a full 5 stars.

You want to enjoy and appreciate Unity? And other open world games then you need to be looking at different headphones.

Hope this helps. I work for Game so I have this conversation on a regular basis and it's amazing how many people just say Sennheiser!

These by all standards are the best you're going to get with a microphone attached
they do have a price tag tho

same goes for the mmx 300 they are without a doubt better than the game zero and the game one but they are bloody expensive.

Personally i can't really wear my Game ones anymore the Phillips Fidelio X1's are more comfortable have a nicer sound and have proved thus far to be excellent for my needs in games. just need a antilion mod mic which i believe we are stocking very soon.

was playing counterstrike at half volume whilst listening to music and they separated the sounds perfectly looking forward to GTA V when it comes out for sure :)

O boy now I am confused! When it comes to system building it is usually my cupa tea I know the ins and outs in most cases. But when it comes to audio I am the biggest noob ever and the reason why I am like this is because all this time I have been using the turtle beach x12's and its only now my mate questioned me wtf I am doing with those lol. So here is me now questioning you guys where to go from here :|

I can see you have a lot of knowledge when it comes to this topic especially with you working close in the field. I just want a pure quality headset for gaming that sounds crisp in fps and open world.

With the GZ I dont know why I am so fixated on them! Maybe just the fact that they are Sennheisers and they have been in the field for so long they are reliable? I really dont know why myself I am fixated on them :| [Maybe because my mate always goes on about them].

Maybe you could recommend an all round gaming headset for me? Regardless of the fact they may not have a mic. I may have to adapt and force myself to buy a separate mic lol. Budget of £200 max and I can put an end to this as I am giving myself a headache lol.

Once again anything will be better than my current turtle beach x12's !

That is bit of a hefty price tag! Will rather save the money and put it towards a 980 on release than going that far!

I got to remember I am coming from a turtle beach x12's so anything is better than that pile of crap lol!

Talking about GTA V thats another game im looking forward to play with a nice new headset!

You mention the Phillips Fidelio X1 being much better than the one's is that in terms of gaming? As I will be using it purely for games. Im looking at a pair now and found them cheaper than the one's/zero's. Looks promising!

I love my phillips x1. Really comfortable I can wear them all day. I think they are generally regarded as an 'all rounder', great for music and games. I'f you are into competitive fps then they might have a bit too much bass (you don't want bass with footsteps). Don't get me wrong I play csgo and positioning is great - but I know there will be better headphones for footsteps like the q701. However, if you play mmos and want immersion, then bass is good! All depends on your needs. Also added benefit of the x1s is that it is compatible with the v-moda boom mic which turns it into an instant mic headset with 1 cable, rather than 2.

pretty much what robbo said Allthough I have no issue with the bass i play a lot of counterstrike and the bass has not been an issue.

This is great news TwsT, I will certainly be on the list for any pre-orders. Hopefully Antilion will allow you to keep the price under £39.95.

Currently using HD650's with the Zalman Clip on mic. The quality through my Sound Blaster Z is fairly average but this is more to do with the mic input than anything else. The Zalman is omni directional so it picks up more ambient noise than the uni directional mic would on the Modmic 4.0.

Thing with Sennheiser is they have put out some pretty crappy headphones but get a lot of credit for their good sets giving people the impression that everything they make is good. For your uses you want a headphone that can produce an airy sound, almost thin and light to hear the virtual game world sounds in the distance and everywhere. Thinner headphones come off as more spacious sounding while others like the HD650 for example, will sound too warm masking up detail and giving the impression that the virtual space is constantly humid.

I recommend the K612, K701/702, Q701, MA900 and AD900x. Any of these will be excellent.
