I like taking photos of everything, but ideally the moon, the sun, landscapes, stuff like telegraph poles and water, and abstract stuff.

my budget is £1300.

I cannot decide between Nikon Canon and Pentax, I have used all 3 with good results.

At the moment im looking at either

Nikon D90 with kit lense

Canon 7D with kit lense (double the price of nikon, but the equivalent 50d doesnt seem very good)

Pentax K7, again double the price of the nikon.

I also need a camera case, cf cards, lenses etc.

What to buy ?

thanks!

really, as the dictionary says:

Noun, 1. lense - a transparent optical device used to converge or diverge transmitted light and to form images. lens, lens system

But thanks for 2 pointless replies, good start to a thread eh ?

Well I did start typing some advice for you but then I remembered the many other similar threads.

The general principles for buying remain the same. Try them all, then you'll know which you want, buy that one.

My opinion is for Nikon because I use a Nikon.

i don't know where you've heard the 50D isn't very good, it is a very capable camera, but is more suited to those who would shoot wildlife / macro and stuff, however, for stuff like landscapes it suffers loss of detail due to fitting so many megapixels on a APS-C sized sensor.

I myself fancy the 7D, and am considering buying it after Xmas as it's currently at it's premium price because it's still new out, and also it's almost Xmas, you can be sure it'll be at least a couple of hudred quid cheaper after christmas, so why not consider buying a second hand 40D for now, which is still a great camera, then after xmas sell it for pretty much what you paid for it then buy the 7D. That will save you £200 in as many months to put towards a nice shiney new lens.

Lenses, now there's a minefield, there are so many different lenses to suit so many subjects, my advice, buy the best you can afford, if you buy cheap you will buy twice, a nice starting line up to aim for imo would be a 17-40F/4L + 24-105 F/4L and 70-200 F/4L and maybe a 2xtc, this will cover a nice range of subjects for you, and when you come to upgrade (which you will), you won't lose that much money as good lenses hold their value.

Thankyou :) Will all those lenses then work with a 7d ?

I don't know what dictionary that was but it's wrong. 'Lense' is not an English word. I believe there's one American dictionary, aimed at students, that has that spelling. In every reputable dictionary it's 'lens'.

The Pentax also K-x looks like a very nice mid-market body for the money as does the Sony A500/A550 whose new sensor it uses.
That way you get to spend more money on glass (which is the important bit) than buying a semi-pro body.

Buy a second hand body, Nikon D200, Canon 40D or whatnot, and spend the rest on lenses.

This is what I would do, good quality lenses will last you for years (I'm still using lenses I bought when using film bodies), the body you will end up upgrading in a couple of years anyway.

I have so far come to this conclusion, I can afford it all (just)

Nikon D90 Camera Body + 16GB Memory Card £658.73

Nikon SB-900 Speedlight i-TTL Shoe Mount Flash £316.08

Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 D Lens £215.34

Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di LD Macro 1:2 Lens Nikon Mount £108.11

Tamron SP AF 11-18mm f/4.5-5.6 Di II LD Aspherical (IF) Lens Nikon Mount £254.99

Sub-Total: £1,553.25

Will this serve me well ? All i need then is tripod, head, filters, camera bag.

To be honest I wouldn't go with all of that kit to start with

Get something cheap like a 2nd hand or refurbished D90 body and a memory card closer to 8Gb, even shooting in RAW+JPEG I can guarantee that you won't fill it in a day.

18-70DX lens should start you for the kind of photography you're into, I can guarantee you won't need the 70-300, or the 50mm f/1.4, I'd get the 50mm f/1.8 (it's not that much better and ~£100 less) and the 28mm f/1.8 (or 2.8 if you can't afford it) with allowance for the Sigma 10-20 f/4.0 if you can afford it

You don't need the SB-900, so go a bit cheaper with an SB-600.

And if you can afford it after that, get a steady tripod.

I would go for d90 without the kit lens.
For the remaining money get the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G which is a superb prime for all around pictures, especially in low light.
For your landscape get something like Tokina 11-16 which is brilliant and fairly cheap for such a wide angle lens.
You won't be disappointed.
