Hey,

I'm looking for another car and have narrowed it down to a few. What I need is economy but without substituting power. I will be driving long country lanes and A-roads every week. I also want comfort and cruise control would be a bonus. I'm 6'4, so no micro cars but a hatchback shouldn't be a worry. After seling my current car we're looking at around £4.5k - £5k max (because I never buy on finance so it will be bought out-right). I've made a few enquiries about the following already:

306 Turbo Diesel (possibly an estate) - I saw a non Turbo 2002 1.8l today (£3.2k) The dealer said he could get nearly 80mpg from it (?) but I'm guessing that will be really sluggish?

Toyota Corrolla 2.0 D-4D - I know the petrol equivalents are decent, how does the diesel compare? Looking at a 2003 model for around £4k.

Skoda Octavia VRs - Completely different kind of choice but it looks like a good performance car for good economy. You also get all the extras including cruise control. Not sure how it fairs on the MPG though  - the Fabia VRS is very good on fuel but how big is that inside?

Any suggestions or advice from owners of the above cars would be very welcome :)

MG ZT?

non turbo 306 estate will no doubt be very sluggish

The ZT looks like a good choice. MPG is good for the size of the car too (according to Parkers). Having had a good look at the Corrolla it appears to be a little too small for me, I'd have to take a test drive. Mondeo's are a very sensible choice and super vaue but for some reason I dont quite like their shape, a few subtle body mods do improve it's shape however, Foglights on the Zetec for example.

The 406 Coupe has caught my eye. I'd have to up my budget for a 2.2 SE HDi but it looks like a good contender for what I require.
