Wow, I just missed the chance to get an Phenom ii X4 965BE for £65 BNIB on a 'popular auction site' but by the time I'd checked out the sellers history and feedback etc the last 3 had sold! Have to say tho even tho his account dated way back and checked out it did seem a little bit too good to be true.

However apart from that brief 'moment' I'm still struggling to decide what CPU to go for. I'm looking for the best AMD processor up to £100 for playing Crysis.
I'm gonna pick up a XFX 4890 with a gigabyte 870A-UD3. I was leaning towards a 555BE and the thought of unlocking it but just can't decide.......

£11 over your budget, but well worth it.

I have suggested the X2 555BE for budget builds (i have an unlocked example myself) but unlocking isn't guaranteed. You will also need to cough up for an aftermarket heatsink to keep the temps in check. The supplied heatsink is tiny (you may get a rebranded X4 but you definately get an X2 Heatsink!)

I guess it would make sense if you put the money you saved from buying the 555 into the gfx card budget. If you could get a 5770 you would be in the "directx11 club" and these cards match a 5870 in xfire which your mobo will support but this would mean buying another 5770 at a later date.

I personally favour a better gpu over cpu for gaming (a lot of games at the mo arent fully using X4s) but if you need grunt for other appz then buying an X4 955 now does make sense.

Yeah a few people have suggested 5770, and while i think it is good value for the spec, Im much more inclined to spend £20 less and have a 4890 that outperforms it by a decent margin on pretty much every game out there, albeit at a higher wattage.

or better still pay £30 more and get an Nvidia 460 card. One of the best bang for buck cards out there atm in my opinion. Near 5850 performance for much less.

I agree the 460 is better on paper but when you look at this:

all it really is is a 'who can get the highest fps' which is fine if your into benching and stuff, but im not sure you'd really see a big rise in performance when your playing in game.
I guess if your keen on DX11 it makes sense but im not fussed about jumping on that feature any time soon.

I would agree the best for your budget with no risk is the 955. I would rather take the sure bet over a chip that might unllock. Alternativley a black edition Triple core could do as they dont lose out much over the quad cores and again a chance of unlocking it.
