Help Me Counterstrike Beginner

I know I'm about 3 years too late but I want to get into counterstrike.
I'm going to start playing it with a mate from work but I'm a bit confused over the best and cheapest way to start playing it.
Do I just buy it from an online shop or can I download it and whats this steam about and do I have to buy that too?

I'm getting absolutely reamed.
Haven't even got a clue how to setup the guns at the start of the game.
I've got no instructions as it was a steam download. :confused:
