please help me cure the stuttering i am getting in all games , at first i thought it to be my gfx card . but i tested fc2 @1024x768 and @1680x1050 , my system stats are below

CPU Model
Phenom II x3 720BE
Video Card:
Sapphire HD4870 512
Motherboard:
MSI KA790GX
Ram:
Kingston HyperX 8500 4GB
Storage:
Hitachi 7K160 Deskstar
Soundcard & Speakers:
Sound Blaster Audigy SE
Power Supply
Seasonic S12+ 550w
Case
Coolermaster cm690
Operating System: OS
vista 32bit

my farcry2 ultra results :

@1024x768
Average Framerate: 48.09
Max. Framerate: 76.58
Min. Framerate: 31.99

@1650x1050
Average Results
Average Framerate: 51.10
Max. Framerate: 81.97
Min. Framerate: 33.30

as you can see not much between the 2 results , but even at 1024x768 it still stutters . i have tried all the drivers for my chipset and gfx thats been released in the last 6 months , but the stuttering still remains no matter what i try . what would you recommend i do next ? , same results with my old mobo also (gigabyte ma-770-ds3) . even relaced my memory to kingston hyperX 8500 2x2gb instead of 4x1gb corsair dominator

Do you have AVG installed by any chance? That's quite a pain for this sort of thing. Is the HDD LED flashing when it stutters? I had this issue and getting rid of AVG solved it :)

Might be worth using filemon if so to verify if something is going on in the background.

was just going to say the same thing.
Got rid of AVG for Avast and all is well :)

For my phenom ii setup i found Cool n Quiet to cause it the most for me, as the constant transistion between multiplers seemed to affect certain games like FC2 quite badly for me at least. Tis a shame disabling it though as it keeps the juice on low when browsing the web n such.

Chaotic - leave filemon running and see if there's anything with bursty access to the HDD, that's the usual cause... heavy IO access causing things to come to a standstill.

What services and other stuff do you have running?
