I'm putting together a new build, and am looking for advice on 2 particular parts.
The parts I'm looking at are not that far apart in price, so I can afford any of them but nothing higher. I would like to overclock a bit (nothing too extreme) and I must admit I'm a fan of Oblivion !
I've lost touch a bit with what's new, so your help would be appreciated. :)

I'm definately sticking with
Intel Core 2 DUO E6300
GeIL 1GB (2x512MB) PC6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel

But I cant decide between (mobo)
Gigabyte GA_965P_DS3
Asus P5B
Abit AB9

(graphics)
HIS ATI Radeon X1950 Pro ICEQ 3 TURBO SILENT Heatpipe 512MB
Connect3D ATI Radeon X1950 XT 256MB
Sapphire ATI Radeon X1950 XT 256MB

Welcome to the forums, either the Gigabyte or Asus motherboard will be fine, I don't know too much about the Abit. The Gigabyte is probably the most popular of the motherboards so might be easiest to get information about overclocking on but I doubt that is a huge issue.

Of the graphics cards I'd pick the cheapest of the X1950XTs as other than price there is very little to differentiate them. :)

Get 2GB of RAM - the textures alone in Oblivion push it over the 1GB you have there. I've heard good things about the P5B and the DS3, so either are worth trying. At that price, its worth looking at the Asus P5N 650SLi.

I wouldn't speed XT money on a DX9 card. I'd stick with an X1950 Pro (connect 3d model) and then upgrade when the cheaper DX10 cards are out.

Thanks for the replies

So you would recommend spending less on the graphics by getting this
Connect3D ATI Radeon X1950 Pro 256MB (£117.49 inc VAT)

and putting the money towards an extra gig of RAM?

Is there that much of a difference between 256MB and 512MB on the graphics card, with regards to playing Oblivion?

I would go for the DS3 or Asus motherboard. I have an AB9, they perform well but I don't like the layout on the board its awkward.

The bigger memory in some games will be more favourable, its primarily advantageous for higher resolutions the more RAM on the graphics cards. I recently purchased a 512MB X1950 Pro because I want it to last me at least a good year and if DX10 games do appear it will hold out better than a 256MB version would.
