My current motherboard is a "Asrock z68 extreme4 gen3 intel z68 (socket 1155) ddr3 motherboard" and it turns out that its not compatible with two 7970's in crossfire so I have come to the good people of OcuK to help me with my choice.

My Spec
Intel Core i5-2500k 3.3ghz sandybridge socket lga1155

2x Corsair Vengeance 8GB DDR3 PC3-12800C10 1600MHz Single Channel Module (CMZ8GX3M1A1600C10)

850w psu

I'm looking for a replacement motherboard that will support two 7970's in crossfire with the above items included.

I also would be interest if its worth upgrading my processor at the same time?

The motherboard I'm considering getting is a
Asus Z87 SABERTOOTH Intel Z87, your thoughts on this would be appreciated

As above. The 2500k is still a good chip. I, like Doomed have the same chip and I`m not looking any time soon to upgrade. Just don`t see as it is worth it, considering the cost to do so and the overall performance gain. But that is my opinion.

Well said, OCUK are selling Z68 motherboards for next to nothing, so best to take advangtage, get a nice new motheroard and carry on rocking the 2500k..

Im keeping mine another few years atleast. :)

That PSU would be fine. :)

EDIT, That motherboard i specced, only does Xfire (x8/x8) in Slot 1 and 3, is that a problem? More air gap for cooling. :)

Same layout but black: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BG-235-GI&groupid=595&catid=689

Thank you all for the comments so far.

I would be looking for a more future proof board x16/x8 but would prefer x16/x16 but it isn't possible with a 1155 chipset (hence the reason of thinking about upgrading my processor)

Sorry to go off topic here, but is it just a coincidence, or is this the old m00ch0 from back in the day of Counter-Strike and the ole' Burst fire servers?

Yes, wow how do you you remember me, I loved them servers and the ranking system on them!

Hey Ben, the Z77 is a newer generation motherboard, thus provides more data lanes on the PCB and has a higher compatibility for things such as Cross Fire.

However from the insane amount of reading I've been doing, there are not many games which scale well (Talking sub 20%) with a 7970, especially when the drivers are soo poor, and even with my 7970 Matrix Platinum I can not see the gains I realistically should.

As you know I run an AMD machine, and have the Asus Sabertooth 990fx r2, which is bloody awesome at keeping low temps, and the ability to OC.

Of course you don't have to OC your 2500k, but you may as well, as you can squeeze abit more performance out of your rig.
