Yes I know, terrible spec me thread.

Anyway, I have a black-tie formal event next weekend that has come about rather suddenly, and my dress waistcoat is in need of repair - I've sent it away but it won't come back in time.

I cannot for the life of me find a black-tie evening waist coat. For those unaware, it's a low cut waist coat such as below, with 3 or a maximum 4 buttons:

except in black of course. Cannot find them anywhere to hire, let alone buy. The only waist coats I can find online (and indeed in Cambridge) are morning/wedding waist coats (high breasted/6 buttons). I'm aware that there are several formal dressers on here, so worth a shot :). I've tried all the usual faux-tailors/suit shops, and a couple of online shops where they have them for ~£100, but I'd rather not spend that as it's only meant to be temporary.

Can you not just go to the formal bit of a department store? Debenhams, House of Fraser, John Lewis, etc. They could all sell you one a lot cheaper than £100 I am sure.

Wouldn't be brilliant, but it doesn't seem that you need it to be.

They don't sell black-tie waist coats, spent 2 hrs looking round Cambridge and all they seem to have is morning/wedding waistcoats.

Go without ?

A cummerbund works as well as if not better and is my choice at black tie do's.

Each to their own though.
Can't really, a cummerbund is not appropriate dress. It's not about "working" better, it's a rather formal event where ettiquete matters. Cummerbunds are for less formal black tie wear.

£100 to have an additional waistcoat to avoid in future the issues you have just now seems like a small amount to pay. Oh, and it also solves your current problem.

Ah, I see. Now that you mention the subject of less formal, I do indeed burp, fart and fight at the black tie dos I attend with a cummerbund.
