budget £400
im trying to stay away from asus boards (personal reasons) my 2 previous msi mbs have been rock solid
i want a full size board

1. ddr5
2. must have thunder bolt 4
3. must have hdmi AND display port (i have lots of monitors and home av equipment, the 4 ports on a gpu dont tend to be enough, so i send audio via hdmi from the mb to other devices)
4. must have wifi

this is not just a case of window shopping, im ready to build a 13th gen system, new case has already arrived.

cheers

hi buddy, when you say add in card connectors what do you mean? it seems really hard (ive looked) to find thunderbolt ports on motherboards (where the usb, hdmi ports are etc) , the one you linked to (like others) dont even have the thunderbolt logo on it.

where as my 12th gen laptop has real thunderbolt 4 ports on it.

just seems a little strange that its hard to find thunderbolt 4 on these latest z790 boards, i think ive seen "real" thunderbolt 4 ports on some asus boards, but i really dont wanna go to asus if i can help it

thanks for your input though

The ASRock Sonic or Lightning + ASRock Thunderbolt card would come in under budget.

I know you don't like Asus, but they have a thunderbolt header even on their low-end boards :o

i just a had a bad expereince with asus in the past, on 2 occasions, can you read over my post above, looks like i typed it as you typed yours, im trying to find thunderbolt 4 already on the motherboard (not by having to add, add on cards etc)

I've looked at Z790 and Z690 boards and I can't find any with thunderbolt on the rear, under budget.

if you get a 2nd can you list what youve found, inc asus lol, i can go to £500 more if needs be, dont really want to, these mbs are already crazy prices

The only two I could find that weren't Asus are the ASRock Z690 Taichi and the MSI Z690 ACE.

The Intel NUC 12 extreme kit also has Thunderbolt 4.

Buying a Gigabyte board with their Maple Ridge add-in card is probably the most reasonable option, as @mickyflinn suggested.

cheers mate your a star, due to ill health ive been out of the loop, memory aint what it was, i just didnt wana annoy people by asking tons of questions, ie will these add on cards take away from the pci lanes? as i wanna use nvme drives (already been reading some mother board manuals and you have to avoid some m2 ports or it will affect speeds etc) ive just been looking into these add on cards, and to be honest they seem to be a much better option then actualy having thuderbolt ports on the back of the mb its self.

You'd have to read all the exclusions in the specs, on the Gigabyte website they list which motherboards of theirs are compatible with the add-in card (lots are, it seems), but they don't say what happens to the PCI-E slots.

I don't think most Z690/Z790 boards will be impacted that much (since they have lots of spare lanes), but eh, buyer beware. If you find a specific Gigabyte board you like, link it here and we can double check the manual.

again thank you, ill have a little look and post what i like here for you tech nerds to look over, i was really into all this just 5 years ago, but ill health destroyed my interest in the techy side of things, using thuderbolt 4 on the laptop is a game changer, much slimer cables for display port etc etc, and as i wanna get 5 years out of this 13th gen build i wanna make sure i spec it right, all ready have a 3080ti which im sticking with. hence why i can push the budget higher, ill be back soon when ive had a little look arround.

The add in card runs at pcie3.0 x 4 so not going to be a massive impact on lanes or may loose a m2 slot but that will depend on the board and how there lanes are laid and usage .
