Help me finish this build

Hi,

I’m hoping someone can help me finish choosing parts for this build? :) I’m almost there (see below), but can’t decide on a motherboard. It would be very helpful if anyone had a suggestion for that. I understand that the Z97 Chipset boards are what I should be looking at for Devil’s Canyon CPUs?

It’s unlikely I’ll be doing any serious overclocking of the CPU, but I might want to upgrade to SLI at some point in the future. And I’ll be adding another three hard drives I already have to the system, so plenty of SATA ports would be good. :D

I thought one possibility could be the Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 7 but I’m open to suggestions.

Thanks in advance. :p

So far I have:
1x Gigabyte GeForce GTX 780Ti WindForce 3x OC 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (GV-N78TOC-3GD)
1x Intel Core i7-4790K 4.00GHz (Devil's Canyon) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail
1x BitFenix Shinobi XL Full Tower Gaming Case - Black
1x TeamGroup Elite Black 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit
1x Samsung 250GB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TE250BW)
1x EVGA SuperNova G2 850W '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply - changed as per suggestion below
1x Western Digital Caviar Green 3TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (WD30EZRX) HDD
1x OcUK Value Blu-ray / DVDRW combi SATA - OEM
1x Alpenföhn Brocken 2 CPU Cooler

I used the configurator on the site (the above is based on the OcUK Pro Gamer X65i) and can almost get what I wanted using that. Hopefully OcUK can work their magic once I know what I want.:D

Hi

Is this just a gaming rig ?
What resolution is your monitor ?

I would personally change the psu to the EVGA Supernova G2. It has a longer warranty (10 years). It is also made by Superflower so it's a win win.

If you are just gaming then I would drop the ram down to 8GB.

The case might not be the best for airflow due to the solid front panel. I haven't looked at reviews so I might be wrong. Are you not bothered about a case with a window to show off your components ?

The motherboard you chose looks pretty solid. You can't really go wrong with a Gigabyte board.

Hi Lee. Thanks for the reply. I'll definitely look at that PSU you've mentioned as an alternative. It looks good.

This will be a gaming rig - and will also be used for some basic (mostly 2D) CAD work. But I guess I might have gone a bit ott with 16GB of RAM.

My current monitors (x2) are 1920*1080.

My currently cases has a window and I will miss it. But the main reason I've chosen a windowless case is that it will live in a bedroom, so less light is better, especially as it will probably be on overnight sometimes.

I'm open to other suggestions for similar cases if anyone has any.

Brilliant.

I have a few changes id suggest.

I can't do a proper spec as OCUK config does include DC (devil canyon) parts yet.

The motherboard, i'd go for the Gigabyte Sniper, this one: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-492-GI

It has SLI capabilities and great onboard sound, absolute Winner. :)

For the case, The Shinobi XL isn't great, airflow wise. Even though it looks worse (it isn;t) the Antec P280 would be my choice. Very stylish IMO. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-168-AN

I'd also get a different cooler, from the config list the K2 is the option id suggest. Epic Cooler, quiet and cooler.

I'd also suggest splashing another £10+ on 2133/2400mhz RAM too, i think 8gb is enough but if you want 16GB it won't be much harm.

I personally don't like the green drives as they only run at 5400rpm, they used to anyway. So i'd ditch that and get a standard seagate one.

Thanks for the case suggestion. That Antec case looks like it deserves serious consideration.

I did look at the K2 cooler but was put off as I assumed it needed 2 CPU fan headers on the mobo which might limit my choices a bit?

I thought the DC processors also only supported RAM up to 1600MHz?

Have OcUK staff hinted at when the config will include DC?

The K2 runs off a single fan header. Both the fans connect via a splitter cable.

The DC cpu supports 2666+ Ram according to the spec on ocuk.

You can choose any parts you want for your build. You don't have to use the configurator. The customer services staff can give you a quote to build whatever you choose (As long as it is all compatible)

If you install the ocuk shopping cart extension (link below) on your browser you can post the final basket in here, and then in the customer services section to get a quote.

Thanks to the posters above. New system is ordered.

I did go for the Antec case (with two additional fans), PSU and faster RAM as suggested. :)
