Hi guys,

I'm trying to keep my cack mk3 Astra 1.6 8v running for a few months until I can Scrappage the bad boy and get a lovely new car!

A week or so ago it stopped starting, you could bump start and that's about it - I thought the battery first but it turned out the starter motor was buggered. I replaced the starter at the weekend and have a new battery for it.

I got it to start and then found a nice big fuel leak in the fuel line at the engine side! Brill...

Went to the scrappy and got an identical fuel line, fitted it with not too much bother however now I can't start again! Won't jump either!

It sounds like the starter is clicking but there's no combustion... my first guess is no fuel is getting to the engine ... but it could also be an electrical fault - maybe there's a bad Earth somewhere?

Anyone got any ideas of what I can try as this is driving me mad!

I'm thinking about putting on a new fuel pump/filter if I can't think of anything else! bear in mind it started before I changed the fuel line!

Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure what I'm hearing from the starter... definately a click which sounds like it's cranking...

however the engine isn't turning over, i.e no start - just the clicking from the starter!! The starter defo works as it started before I replaced the fuel line and put a different battery in - I have charged the battery to full and tried jumping too to rule this out!!

cheers for the reply! This is doing my pecks in!

If the engine isn't turning over then clearly it's not cranking. The click will be the solenoid engaging (or trying to engage) the starter motor pinion with the flywheel. You either have a bad connection on the high current side, or something is preventing the starter engaging. Did you compare the new starter with the old one to make sure they are exactly the same, same number of teeth on pinion etc?

check the main earthing points.

battery>chassis
chassis>engine
battery>engine

a quick resistance check with a multimeter is all you need.

what voltage is at the battery when sat and what does the alternator output on idle if you can bump start it.

Are you sure the "new" fuel line isn't blocked?
Maybe it has a family of earwigs living in it or something.

Turns out the battery is totally buggered but not only that the starter was jammed out!!

I tried a batt off another car and rocked mine back and forth a bit to release the starter cog and it started first time no prob!!

Finally!
