A friends friend has given me their pc to fix. They said they had a virus off MSN and it wont work, so ive just set it up at home, and my god is it fudged!

You can't defrag it
You pres on IE it just crashes
Im trying to install Spybot but it says "invalid floating point operation" something or the other, then crash
Mcafe is install on it, but it crashes on start up.

I'm running outta options, what more can i try? Formatting it would be next on my list, but is there anything else i can do ?

It's been turned off, so there is no restore points at all.

I just tried adaware which crashed as well, hmmm

I managed to run smitfraud from a USB stick, which seems to have killed some, but its still pretty wrecked. You can't do anything on it without it just falling over and crashing.

before you format, you might want to get a live linux and copy the important documents to a different HD.

Seems beyond repair actually, safe mode doesn't seem to want to work either. I've backed his pictures up to a usb pen so i might format.

When it crashes, alt ctrl del says its been disabled by administrator  Never seen a PC so clogged up with crap.

Personally i wouldnt bother with trying to repair, and just format.
afterwards make sure you tell the owner not to be clicking randomly on the internets..

Could't get into safe mode, it would just crash. So its formatted now and back up and running.

Only niggle is on boot, it askes which operating system to load, and gives me two XP options?

I've booted from the CD and made sure all partions were deleted, leaving one remaining partion which i installed xp onto.

Never had this issue, any clues?

you'll want to remove an entry from the boot.ini file. It's located on the root of your c drive. You will have to view hidden and system files to see it and you'll also have to change it's attributes so it's no longer read only.

note; make sure you back it up in case you delete the wrong line!!!

Hope it helps.

Deleted one entry, still makes me choose between two on boot though

Edit - Worked, cheers :)

If it is that fubar'd I'd say they could just do with a fresh install after formatting. Make sure you keep all their stuff. It's often the best way to go in extreme circumstances imo.
