Ok, got myself a DD-WRT firmware'd WRT54G router and my PC (20m away, throu 3 walls) has a belkin PCI jobbie.

The best signal I can get is about 2bars, its constantly bouncing up and down from 12MB to 48MB and randomly dropping.

What can I do to make the signal better? Is there a particular way I should point all the ariels?

edit: its currently got a WEP key, with a beacon interval of 50ms and i've tried different channels

I assume you have increased the routers output power to 70mW?

If possable move the router to a more central location & higher up

I found having both router & pci antennas the same orientation helped (horizontal for upstair/downstair)

You could also add 9dBi antennas

Also check for emi/RFI emitting equipment around the router, you could also notice a nice speed boost if you move them away....

Check out the following links for more information:

It will probably improve your snr too... anywho..I had a radio running at 1400mhz which was interfering with my wireless router, I removed it and it works perfectly.

Happy EMI/RFI hunting :)

I've heard that adding a flat section of tinfoil behind the router bounces rear radiation back into the room.

try a different location, some houses have dead spots.
