Help me get my Q6600 over 3.0Ghz

I'm a complete n00b to overclocking, I've been running it at 3.0Ghz for a year now no issues, load temps are below 62oC. I'd ideally like to try for 3.2Ghz or higher. It just blue screens when at anything over 3.0Ghz, the only things I've tried are 400Mhz fsb with all volts stock and 400*8 for 3.2 but it just BSOD when windows loads.
 
you will have to increase the voltage. sounds like you are using stock heatsink, i would suggest no more voltage increas until you get an aftermarket cooler if that is the case.

then the general rule of thumb is increase the fsb in increments notching up the vcore slightly each time.

make sure to:

1) get aftermarker heatsink, cooling
2) check intel site for your max vid
3) read faq's about overclocking
4) start with small overclocks - work your way up
5) watch memory speed go up, try and keep at reccomended
6) run prime95 for about 8 hours to test stability - use coretemp to watch your actual cpu temps
7) if computer is stable, try and reduce vcore or other voltage settings and keep system stable.

anything else just ask, but be careful.
 
Well I have it stable at 3.2Ghz now. :) Tested for 1hr in hyper pi.


400MHz FSB
800MHz DRAM
PCI-E 101Mhz

Core Voltage 1.36v
 
i wouldnt bother changing the PCI-E frequency, there is no proven benefits, if anything could be a bad thing.

What cpu cooling are you using, what temps are you getting in CoreTemp?
 
yes, but lets say for example (hard to say as first poster has not give much info):

your stepping is Go and a VID of 1.2v, and princey's is a B3 with a 1.3v VID - using the same settings will likely be not stable, because he will have to use more voltage and that revision is likely to run up hotter.

Then advanced settings like EIST,C1E could be disabled on yours, enabled on his and could cause other stability options.

finally, it has been known that even with identical hardware, using the same overclock on both computers does not mean both will work.

By all means try it, and it could work good. I just want to pass on some of my experiences, and i still think he should read up on the subject first.

I see what you mean. I've not got loads of experience with overclocking so thanks for the info...I've learnt something new today :)
 
good luck, that cooler should be enough and those q6600's are brilliant overclocking chips, just keep an eye on the temps and voltages and dont go daft, you will be fine.
 
Toon mad is right, i had a nice 1.2750 vid q6600. GO 3.6ghz came easily at 1.4v, took lapping both cpu and cooler and more powerful fans to hit 3.8ghz, and it was hardly worth the hassle, a few more points in benchmarks, no difference in games.
 
spot on setter, the extra couple of mhz is really benchie scores, you wont get any real world differences.

just recently i tried 4ghz-4.3ghz, not a massive difference at all. then i tried 4.3ghz-4.5ghz again no difference, i settled at 4.28ghz so i can keep my vcore in the intel specification vid range.

3.6ghz is underrated to be fair and a huge boost from stock 2.4ghz, as long as you play it safe and take your time you will be fine. you have the right chip and good motherboard to do it on.

Wrong. Changing the PCI-E frequency to 101 instead of 100 locks it to prevent it being overclocked along with the FSB.
 
I actually done a bit of a silly upgrade. i had a q6600 at 3.8ghz. swapped it for a q9550. which also hit 3.8ghz, board i was using was an asus p5q deluxe, i reckon the q9550 would have done 4.4-4.5ghz with ease. most i ever pushed it was 3.8ghz on 1.21 vcore (vid of 1.200), ive since moved to i7 as i encode a lot of video now. + fancy proper sli/xfire.
 
same here went from 3.7ghz q6600 to what i have now, sold it with a abit ip35 pro xe, for me its been a good upgrade with the cpu and board i have now. would have went i5/i7 but meant getting a new heatsink, and the true is still a top air cooler :)

nice spec by the way setter.
 
Thanks toon, i gotta adnit my p5q dlx q9550 was an awesome combo, i actually regret selling it now, but i needed the cash to finance my i7 setup, even my q9550 at 3.8ghz was a cracker, i only wish id held onto it a bit longer, but i gotta admit, the i7 920 is fantastic, running it with 6gb of ram on win 7 64 bit, ordering the coolermaster 800d next week and considering going to watercooling, i remember your thread about clocking the q6600, 3.7 ghz is pretty good with a late model q6600, i got extremely lucky with mine. And btw im still using my TRUE black, as you say, An awesome cooler,:)
