Help me get the best out of Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines

I picked this up on 3 CDs in a local game shop and I'm aware it's particularly buggy in unpatched form and I'm sure there are loads of mods and fixes for it. What do you recommend I install for a first time play through?
