Hi, I'm in need of some help. I seem to have hit a brick wall and I'm stuck at 2.85Ghz. So close to getting 3Ghz! I can boot into Windows at 2.9Ghz as well. It's taunting me. Lol.

So, here's what's what.

Multi - x10
FSB - 285
HTT - x3

So this is my current 2.85Ghz overclock, which is running stable with 1.45v (1.41v BIOS).

I've upped chipset and LDT voltages by 0.1v (one notch) to aid stability.

My RAM is on a divider and running underclocked to rule out any issues of stability relating to itself.

So, during my testing I even put the RAM on to 2T command rate to help even more and started to up the FSB.

With 290x10 I can boot into Windows, but Orthos crashes after 10s on the CPU stress test. I have upped the voltage in steps to 1.5v then 1.55v and then even 1.60v. All of which still cause Orthos to fail at roughly 10 - 16s.

:(

Am I doing something wrong, or is the chip at it's max basically? I've ran Memtest to triple check the memory is defo not causing problems, which it can't be imo saying it's underclocked at running at 2T.

Is it just the CPU? I can't believe going from 1.45v -> 1.6v has made no difference. Is Orthos just being stupid? Could I use another application to stress the cores?

Cheers for any help!

Is the chip your referring to the X2 3800+ in your sig? If so then I would think it has probably hit it's maximum at 2.85GHz.

Edit: Have a look at the X2 3800+ overclocking thread just down the page, anything above 2.85GHz looks like you'll be needing water or even phase cooling.

I'm not sure if i missed what coolng solution you are using, but it looks to me like you have found a limit on the CPU. All I can suggest is that you rule out any motherboard issues by dropping the multiplier and playing with a higher fsb. It might get you a higher OC..

other than that, what temps are you hitting? can you get it any cooler ( i run my kit with the sides off all the time :))

Cheers for the replies.

It's watercooled, so temps are fine, sorry I didn't mention that.

Aye I think it's probably just at it's max. :( booo. Lol.

Thanks anyways!

Well its not a rubbish overclock if that makes you feel any better :D I had early X2 3800+ that would'nt even do 2.3Ghz stably no matter the vcore. I think the best i ever got from one was 2.6Ghz ish before i went to Opty 165s.

haha thanks for the pep talk. Actually, I think I may have made a discovery as per "aztechnology's" reply.

I've upped the FSB to 323 and dropped the multi to x9.

I managed to run Orthos for 15min before crashing, better than 10s like last night. So I've upped the voltage and I'm now going to try again.

:D

EDIT:
Right this is really annoying. Up the voltage and now it crashes after about 10-30s. I don't get this like. Lol. It's like someone dangling a carrott in front of my face and I'm a donkey. LOL!
