Help me identify this picture

This is "The Mandylion of Edessa" from the private chapel of the pope in the Vatican and is considered to be the earliest painting of Jesus.

Artist unknown but thought to have been painted in 609.

Hmm? The Mandylion of Edessa was supposedly painted by Ananias for the Royal Palace at Edessa.

Sorry I got the date wrong. It was 1 AD and went missing in 609.

As for artist it says this "It is one of a number of holy images 'not made by human hands' whose origins are obscured in legends of the early Christian East"

So hence I guess artist unknown????

And it's all tied up with the Turin Shroud so nobody knows bugger all for sure.

It went missing when it was moved to Constantinople. And most images of Christ are surrounded by some legend and myth, this one appears to have a fairly mundane history though.

And it's all tied up with the Turin Shroud so nobody knows bugger all for sure.

Well it was originally thought to be the origin of the Turin Shroud, folded so only the face showed. This was discounted however due to it being an image of him whilst merrily in his alive days, and the Shroud was allegedly the item of clothing in which he was buried.

That's a picture of God, I should know, he came round last night for beans on toast. He made me cut the crusts off though, weirdo.

Almost all the search results I get for The Mandylion of Edessa come up with this image here, or is it that the one I posted first was just a take someone else had had on the one below?

I saw exactly that image on the back of a pringle yesterday. Perhaps it's that you are after. I've sent it the Pope in a jiffy bag just in case.
