Requested some spec help a few months ago, but things got in the way and I wasn't able to purchase.

But I'm ready now and based of suggestions and bundles not available, I now have this -

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £1,079.09
(includes shipping: £13.20)

I haven't added and coolers or fans and would love suggestions on what I would need for this build.

Also not sure if it will all fit in that case...

It will be used for gaming and 3d work. My budget is about 1200 any suggestions/tips?

Cheers!

1) go for x99 + 5820k bundle. depending how much 3d work you want to do.
2) you can look for a smaller power supply. Unless you want to go SLI/CFX down the line
you can get a 600/650W
look for Super flower leadex, evga supernova g2.

Ugh why wont the [img ] tag work :(

Part of the BBCode is missing. If you edit your post you need to type 'http:' after the image line of text.

So where it says: //www.overclockers......... it should say: [img]http://www.overclockers........

You will need to edit each [img] line.

[quote="Fait, post: 29126672"]Why x99 + 5820k bundle ? whats the difference between that and what I have?[/QUOTE]

The i7 5820K has 6 cpu cores whereas the i7 6700K has 4. If you are doing work that can make use of the extra cores, then the 5820K should be faster.

In any case, you need DDR4 Ram as DDR3 won't work with that Skylake board. And the bundle you have chosen is ATX so it won't fit in the Bitfenix Phenom as that only takes microATX.

Do you plan on adding a 2nd graphics card in the future ?

Thanks,

Yes a possible future upgrade as I would like to get as much mileage out of this as possible.

What cooling would you suggest?

If you want the extra cpu cores then here is an X99 build.

The Fractal Design Node 804 is nice if you don't mind a bigger matx case. It comes with 3 x 120mm pre-installed fans.

Alpenfohn Matterhorn is a good cooler for the money.

A 850w psu is massive overkill for any of those builds. Even if you added a second 970 down the line a decent 650w psu is more than enough. I wouldn't be spending £320 on a 970 either.

The Gigabyte GTX 970 competes very well with an R9 390X if you look at the review below. You should also be able to get a very good overclock on it.

You could go lower on the psu, but 850W will allow for any 2 card setup if the op decides to go for something higher end in the future. I personally wouldn't go any lower than 750W.

Wow, thanks for all the help Lee!

A few questions, Why that card over the one I chose?

How do you think this rig will be for gaming?

Is there much difference over a Skylake setup?

Thanks again.

The Gigabyte card is just an alternative to the KFA2. It should easily overclock just as well. It also has some upgraded components, so that should help avoid any potential coil whine issues.

The KFA2 is still a very good card though if you prefer that one.

It should perform very well as long as you don't expect to game at 4K. I would say that 1080p is the best resolution for a GTX 970.

If your 3D work can make use of the extra cores/threads then the i7 5820K should give you better performance.

Because anything over £300 is silly money for a 970. You have cards like this Zotac (5 year warranty) and this KFA2 (2 year warranty but zero coil whine guarantee) that are not that far behind the Gigabyte with clockspeeds yet are much cheaper.

That is one poor review you have selected as an example and most other reviews do not agree. 970 do not really compete with 390x in most titles. 390x competes with 980 (980 is generally ahead), 390 compete with 970 (With 390 mostly taking the lead). This still seems to be the case when all are OCed unless you get a good clocker. A 970 @ 319 is bonkers. IMO anything over 270 for a 970 is crazy especially considering the price you can pick up a sapphire 390 for (Which is one of the best 390s) or a xfx 390x for £300.

Also if you do decide to dual card later, then a 390 is a better choice due to the large amount of vram available, 970s with 3.5+5 may have some limits.

Just to note though, I agree with Lee when is comes to PSU (especially if you plan to xfire 390s later) I would be looking at a good brand 850w. 750W would be cutting it too close IMO.
