hello. First post here at ocuk have been using this forum for a wealth of knowledge for years hopefully someone can help me with my somewhat complicated question. Might need someone with some serious cable mod experience.

I have recently bought a VEga 64 liquid cooled edition, a powerhungry beast at the best of times. Currently it is running off of the dual 8pin gpu cable that came with the psu, however these are doubled and they are not separate wires for each pcie connector. While this runs I feel if I overclocked it too hard (modifying the power table) it will draw too much for the single wire(and it may heat up).

I currently have a superflower leadex 2 850w gold psu. The connectors psu side are ‘universal’ 3x3 connectors. My question is this:

I have 2 spare 3x3 off psu not being used, both Molex and satapower. If I wired 2 x8 pin pcie wires using high quality wire and sheathing and matching the pinout of the current dual 8pin wire, will this overload/damage my psu’ 12v rail? Am I alright to make 2 shortened custom pcie cables for this power supply or can I only use 1 pcie power cable at one time from a psu of this strength, I don’t see power draw being much higher I just want to run 2 cables for it!

Hi and welcome to the forums. :)

The Superflower Leadex II 850w is a top quality psu and is capable of running a pair of medium power draw gpu's in Sli. While the Vega 64 is indeed a power hungry card your psu is easily capable of powering it using a pair of cables. Your psu has eight 9 pin universal sockets that you can plug any leads but the motherboard power leads into. Your psu should have come with 2 pci-e cables each with a pair of 6+2 pin connectors. With a Vega 64 it is recommended to use seperate cables for each pci-e socket so you should try to find the extra cable. If you can't find the second pci-e cable you would either need to buy one or make one. You could take the socket off one of the spare leads and use that to make your own cable but make sure to exactly match the pinouts of the current pci-e cable or something could go expensively wrong. You would also need to source a 6+2 or 8 pin plug for the gpu end. The Superflower Leadex II 850w uses AWG18 gauge wire for it's pci-e leads and you canbuy that cheap enough. Same for shrinkwrap and braiding.

On a side note have you had a look at the massive Vega 64 owners thread in the gpu section? There are some very good tips and tweaks in there for power saving which strangely increases performance.

Right so I have misplaced a lead. Damn thank you very much. I may be able to find it but I was just looking for confirmation that I was Okay to make a custom pair anyway. I will be using the original connectors, however some less knowledgeable people earlier today told me I would 'Blow it all up' and I like to err on the side of caution.
Have 17awg(cablemod) and connectors on the way also, and have undervolted the card to a point im very happy with, hoever my thermals are way below where they need to be and I can still hit the powerlimit relatively easily, and don't mind burning another 75 watts for like 3% performance, so was going to modify the powertable.

As long as you exactly match the pinouts on the original cable you won't blow anything up. That only happens when you get pins in the wrong place which can blow the psu and other components connected to it. We had a guy on here last year that swapped psu's but left the previous psu's cables in place because he couldn't be bothered to redo the cables. Of course the pinouts where different on the new psu and he blew up the psu and his brand new gpu. That was a completely avoidable but expensive mistake.
