A friend of mine has given me the chance to buy either a MSI GTX 970 Gaming or a Gigabyte 780 ti Windforce from him at pretty similar prices. I am going to be using an Oculus Rift to play Elite and Alien Isolation, and the rest of the time just playing at 1080p for the time being.
I'n sure either will be a decent step up from my current 280X but I really want to know which card performs the best?

I think they might have been pretty similar in actual GPU power at one point, but the 970 uses less energy and has aged much better than the 780ti in modern games.

As above, there's not a big difference between them, though I believe the 780Ti was slightly faster (at one point anyway), but personally, I'd take the 970 for the aforementioned lower power draw and higher vram. It's just a generally more refined product.

Ex 780ti owner here.

When I had to make up my mind between the two the 780ti was the faster card.

Now the 970's pulled it back due to better driver support.

The 970 is the minimum recommend card for VR as well.
