Hi,

I've been running Ubuntu on my laptop for about 2 years and have found it great for my purposes (web browsing, email, a few movies, music etc).

I have been thinking about putting ubuntu onto my desktop pc but I have a few problems that I need to overcome first and I hope that the knowledgeable people on here can help me out.

1) HD playback - I currently run my 32" 1360 x 768 LG flatpanel as my monitor. I use CoreAVC to play back 720p MKV's on my cheapie Geforce 5200 which it does very well. Playback is smooth (as long as I don't attempt 1080p files!) on my AMD64 3200 with 2gb dual channel memory. The issue is that when I attempt 720p playback with ffdshow it is very choppy. I believe that if I were to use ubuntu on this pc then I would only get playback similar to ffdshow. This is a showstopper for me. Is there anything I can do (besides buying new hardware) which will enable playback similar to coreavc permits?

2) Divx and DVD upscaling - I currently upscale my non-hidef movies using a ffdshow setup which uses the high quality Lanzcos filter to upscale to my monitors native resolution. I also use a denoise and sharpen filter. This achieves a very good picture improvement. I have looked to try to find something similar on my ubuntu laptop but I cant figure it out. The closest I have come it using SMPlayer which has a basic "postprocessing" option but it doesnt seem to save the setting and it has to be set for each video.

3) Xbox 360 integration - Is there a way to share video's and music to my xbox in the same way as I can in WMP11.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Luke

Hi.

Well I took the plunge on my own seeming as advice wasnt very forthcoming and am happy to say that after A LOT of fiddling I have managed to get CoreAVC for Linux installed and I have HD playback which is as good if not better than vista. Had to compile a patched version of Mplayer SVN to support it but its all working now. Should never have worried about the video tweaking options as Mplayer has more than enough to keep me happy and I am very happy with the picture.

Still working on 3) but otherwise its looking really good.

Its just smooth playback I care about really... I was struggling to get great framerates before using ubuntu-mplayer-ffmpeg but its fantastic now. I'm really very impressed - I'm sure the colour reproduction is better with ubuntu-mplayer-coreavc than it was with vista-mpc-coreavc.
