Hi all,

I recieved my motherboard, processor & ram as specced for me here

I removed my old components & fitted them into my daughters PC and all went well. However I fitted the new things in mine and I am pulling my hair out :(
What is happening is it is when I power it on it spins up the fans for 5 secs then they stop then spinning them up again and this goes on & on. I reseated everything, unplugged memory, double & triple checked the wiring and am now at a loss as what to do. Any ideas greatly appreciated. My psu is a 700w modular so I presume this is ok as it worked fine with my previous component.

That's a pain in the butt, couple of things come to mind, some of which you may already done / tried.

The 8 pin for cpu power connected, also try a CMOS reset.

Have you tried with only one memory module in various slots.
 
Cobblers, the board only has a 4 pin slot, so used to 8 pin!

Have you the CMOS reset yet.
 
I left this for 1 hour yesterday then started it up and it got to bios, I picked first boot device as hdd then saved & exit but the system froze. It is the only time I have seen the hdd light come on. Getting fed up now, could it be a lack of power from my psu?
 
When you've tried it in your daughter's PC did you use your power supply or hers?

The Hi-Power Black 800W Modular is not a dirt cheap PSU but they seem to have been around £50 new which is pretty cheap for a modular 800W PSU.

I assume you have the standoffs installed in your own PC?
 
Hi-Power are made by Sirtec/Sirpa depending on the model. There is also no such thing as a quality £50 800w modular psu. It's the wrong place to try to save money.
 
Hi, my daughters pc is my old setup as of 3 days ago, fitted all the components in her PC except psu. Yes all the standoffs are still in the same holes, seems gigabyte & asus use the same holes. Her PSU is a Thermaltake 500w one, but I needed a new one for my gfx card hence the PSU. The gfx card is not in the new build as yet, was waiting for all to be ok before fitting.

Old PSU in daughter's PC = works

Hi-Power Black 800W Modular = doesn't work

I conclude that the The Hi-Power Black 800W Modular is knackered or not up to the job of powering you new rig.
 
thanks I will try it in the next few days, my old rig was a asus p5q-vm, intel q6600, 8gb ocz reaper 1066, asus gtx470, dvdrw, dvdrom.
new build is mobo, ram & cpu as stated in other post (link in 1st post of this thread), no disc drives or gfx cards fitted as yet. woulda thought there was enough power but maybe it needs more for new build or indeed it is knackered
 
Take the Thermaltake out of your daughters pc and try it in yours. Although it's not a great psu itself at least it works and should be ok to make sure the new components are fine. If it all works then it's definately the cheap psu at fault. Just because it says 800w does'nt mean that it will actually be able to deliver that power. Most cheap psu's can only deliver a fraction of their stated output.
 
Hi, took the thermaltake out & powered up the new build and exactly the same problem of starting & stopping. It is weird, it boots to bios 1 in 4 now but then freezes (with original 800w psu). I even tried her hdd but it was just the same, fitted all hers back & booted 1st time. Could it be an overheating part, but nothing seems hot?
