Dell XPS M1710 with Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG card.

So, went to the library today and tried to connect to the free Wi-Fi. My laptop picked up the network and "successfully connected" to it (security free, obviously). Then a few seconds later I get a message "Did not receive IP address" or "Could not obtain IP address" or similar. Tried connecting several times and changing some settings but all to no avail. So...what's the problem?!

Sounds like they dont have DHCP setup? does the "free wifi" need you to set a manual IP?

My first port of call would be the IT dept to ask about the ip system used on the wifi.

Also check your wireless card settings in network manager and make sure it doesnt have a manual ip already set, if it does set it to gain automatically and try again.
