So my daughter had some homework to do and said she cant do what she needed to do using word she said she needs to use the software called office,There is so many to choose from which one is it? also i see in the info its saying subscription? what do you have to pay every year?

Yep im dumb never had this when i was at school lol

Office is just the group name for all off Microsoft's office type stuff (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, )
What does she actually need to use.
You can get a 1 year subscription, 1 pc, 1 tablet and 1 phone for £29 on ebay.

Or there's a student own, but not sure what you need to verify

But if you already have word, excel etc then you don't heed to buy anything.

Thanks,But im not sure about that because its for my daughters school work,So she has to be able to do what ever she will be doing at school.

She needs to use word so she can put pictures on it and resize them etc also she said she will maybe need to use powerpoint.

I have an Office 365 subscription for £8 a month. It has some excellent benefits and might be an option for you. Plus you can cancel it at any time.

That's really expensive if it's just for personal use.

Or if you want to keep 5 users

Does the school not have any Virtual Learning Enviroment or Office365 package she can log into? When I was at school we we're asked to do publisher and all sorts.

Hi,Thanks for your advice.

But i definitely dont want to be paying a subscription for her school work.

I have no idea what she can access at school,I think a visit at her school to find out.

Ok im so glad i came on here to find out,She is now saying most of the kids have to do it at school,Its just some kids has office at home.

She is going to find out if she has to buy it if they wont to do homework at home.

Thanks.

My mum works in a primary school and they currently use Microsoft Office 2010.

There used to be teacher/student version that was like 60 quid (thats how I got my 2010 copy due to mum :))

Some schools allow free copies of office for students if the school is in certain programs (volume licensing iirc). Link. So it may be worth checking about this with the school.

Don't forget if it's just typing up stuff like a document you can use the online versions of word via onedrive/outlook.com or you could get one of the many free alternatives.

Cheers shall look into everything, How my daughter was coming across sounded like she needs this because she is the only one who cant do their homework but infact most of the kids do it at school if they need to use powerpoint etc...

If she has a Windows 8 or above PC at home that she logs into with an email address and password, eg Microsoft account, then she would already have access to OneDrive. OneDrive is Microsoft's cloud storage drive for users to save their work in their own space on the web. OneDrive also includes free versions of some of the Office applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. If she doesn't currently use a Microsoft account it is free to sign up for one and gives the user 15GB of cloud storage space.

The school will be using Microsoft Office, which sadly is also a very expensive option, even for students. The file format is doc and docx which other office suites can open but there are some compatibility issues. I would go with thenewoc's suggestion and use the online version, a little more basic than the offline version, but it's free and is fully compatible. It also stores on the cloud as well so you don't need to worry about losing your files (and from experience, keeping homework and coursework on a USB drive is a bad idea).

I used Libre Office but it had trouble opening files from Microsoft Office and vice versa if the file is a little complex.
