I'm actually looking to upgrade both my GPU and my monitor.

GPU wise I'm eying up either a GTX 970 or a R9 290x.

My dream monitor is likely the Acer Predator XR341CK but given this won't be out for something like 8 months (guessing) I think I'm going to go with a stop gap monitor and then trade it out when the XR341CK releases. I want to take advantage of the G-Sync this monitor offers so I'll need a GTX 970 at least.

So this leaves me with 2 options I'm considering in the meantime,

Option 1 )

LG 34UM67 with a R9 290x

Largely for the free sync. Although maybe I won't get much out of the free sync as I'm thinking the R9 290x will probably manage to push out over 60 fps on this 2560x1080 monitor anyways. On the flip side it'd be nice having the headroom and adaptive sync to smooth over any dips.

Option 2 )

Samsung S34E790C with a GTX 970

This has the pro that I won't have to swap out the GTX 970 when I upgrade the monitor but I think I'd rather have free sync over 3440x1440. Also not sure how much FPS I'll get from a GTX 970 at this resolution. This option is more expensive but I'm not really fussed.

I've looked at so many options I'm losing perspective. I think the two I've laid out above are the best I can do but if anyone has any other input it'd be helpful.

In short, some advice please! :)

I would honestly go for 3440x1440 over free sync. I run mine with vsync and Its as smooth as butter and no tearing at all that I can see. Although I am running two 290 cards so it pretty much never drops below 60 which as I understand it is what freesync is made for to sync your refresh rate to your fps but if it never drops below 60fps then its not going to be noticible correct?

The LG panels suffers from bleed which the Samsung one doesn't as its VA. I had 5 of the LG ones and 4 went back because of bleed.

With the Samsung you can also keep the same video card so that's a bonus and 3440x1440 will certainly look much better than 2560x1080 which isn't a huge step up from 1920x1080.

So in my opinion after going through 8 monitors in the last 9 months The LG's only advantage is freesync but at that res I cant imagine you will go under 60fps often to even notice it.

The Samsungs advantages are that you can keep the same card, its a higher resolution and there will be no backlight bleed. Plus the blacks are deeper aswell with it being a VA panel.

Hope this helps :)

my advise go with 3440x1440 amazing experience, regard fps I have gtx 980 ref card if I drop settings medium-high normally I keep 60fps butter smooth gaming, for me bleed not a problem just I don't like ips glow (Samsung have very minimal glow, clouding on edges) 2x I own had this issue. Now I have dell 34 ips and very happy very minimal bleed in light condition no noticeable. sorry for bad English :)

I'd go for a Dell U3415W or the Samsung S34E790C personally. You really need 1440p IMO on a 34" 21:9 monitor and those 2 seem to be the best out at the moment. I'm happy with the Samsung though from the various reviews and reports I'm sure the Dell would be equally good.

Either that or hold fire for a 1440p Freesync 21:9 monitor to appear but you could be waiting a long time....

Option 2

2560x1080 is fine for 29" but not 34"

Exactly.. pixels per inch on the 29" is about 23/24 1080p monitor if i recall correctly..

However overall i would wait until the new 21:9 screens are released even if you dont care about gsync/freesync. They should have a lot less motion blur which is one of the few things annoying me a lot about my otherwise splendid AOC 2963pm

The Acer Predator XR341CK looks stunning and ticks all the boxes for me, I'd love an ultrawide setup but I'm worried it could go down the same path 3d has and fade away with not much interest, all the devs need to start adding ultrawide settings out of the box so we won't be as cautious about dropping a grand on a monitor that may not be used to its full potential or having to rely on mods. Is there any new info regarding It's features or release date yet?

I don't think that it will, I think it will likely see more interest than 4K in the desktop computer market at least. Unlike 3D, you don't need any equipment strapped to your face and it has an obvious and immediate benefit in all things you might do with a pc, in the case of the displays with a 1440 vertical ...a very obvious benefit for productivity too.
