Looking to replace my 52 reg Mondeo as it's getting long in the tooth (124k miles), drinking more oil than I'd like, its scratched (paintwork and alloys) to buggery (not me, honest) and tbh, I'm a bit bored of it, as reliable as it's been for a £900 car.

So... I went to drive two Mazda 6s today. :D

I know I know, basically the same car isn't it? First off there's an absence of good cheap cars near where I live unfortunately hence why I've been looking at this one particular dealer at the moment.

TL;DR

Mazda 6 mk1 vs mk2?
Mazda 6 mk2 2.0 vs 2.5 petrol?
Should I buy something good instead?

First one: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201611039402483

Drove well, but definitely needed new tyres and discs/pads. Engine bay was suspiciously clean for the oldest car, and it's had 4 owners. Otherwise it's in good condition, alloys could do with a refurb and has a couple of small marks on the paintwork. It failed it's MoT back in August on the following:

front registration plate missing (6.3.1a)
Supplementary Restraint System warning lamp indicates a fault AIRBAG (5.4.2)
offside front Anti-roll bar linkage missing DAMAGED/MISSING (2.4.G.1)
offside rear Wheel nut(s) missing (4.2.A.1e)
nearside front inner Tyre tread depth below requirements of 1.6mm (4.1.E.1)

Which makes me think it may be a bit of a lemon as well as being overpriced?

I liked this a lot, but I wondered whether it was worth twice the price... It's only had one owner, it's much better spec'd, the interior was really nice. General condition was much better overall as you'd expect. It also seems like a much bigger car than the change in dimensions suggests. Perhaps a tad overpriced too. They don't appear to be too common though, as within a 30 mile radius, there's only two others at £3.8k and £5k and both have considerably more miles and more owners.

It's MoT history is cleaner too, it's failed twice but only on tyres and wipers.

They also have a couple of newer 2.0 Tamuras - http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201609147743320 & http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201611240045626 - although I prefer the look of the older model.

I'm looking to keep whatever I get for a good 5 years or so whilst we're saving for a deposit and buying a house. I do less than 10k annually with a few longer trips a few times a year up north to visit family.

My initial gut feeling is to go for one of the newer cars but they're at the top end of what I was planning to spend. They offered me £250 for the Mondeo as part exchange which is less than I'd get private but I don't really have the patience to sell it at the bottom end of the market, especially in it's condition.

So is the 2.5 Sport worth the extra dosh over the standard 2L? It's a few quid difference to insure, and the MPG doesn't appear to be much worse either. And is the mk2 Mazda 6 much much better than the original?

I cant say much about the petrol engines and so can't help you much on the linked examples, but I had the 2ltr diesel but it was a great car to own. I bought at 59k miles and did over 60k in 2years. I did regular servicing as expected and I did change the timing belt as it was time to do so (around 75k). It gave me no suprise bills and it never let me down. Very comfortable and easy to drive. Mine was a 58 plate TS2. I paid £6700 for an immaculate car and sold it for £3000 as I needed a quick sale. The only reason I sold it was due to company car.

Hope this helps.

What I want to know is what type of owner tries to get an MOT without a front number plate attached?

I wouldn't want a car previously owned by that person.

I test drove a 2.5l petrol back in 2009, and it didnt feel like a particularly powerfull car. I did like the MK2, well put together, decent kit levels and looked a nice car in the right colour. I think finding a nice petrol maybe difficult as most people went for diesels.

Other cars in this category would be the Mondeo and Accord, both very accomplished cars and a bit more interesting than a Passat or Avensis or Octavia etc.

The 2.5 is a nice engine tuned for efficiency rather than power but I wouldn't say it doesn't feel powerful it pulls nicely in all gears and has quite nice acceleration in higher gears. Own a mk 2 facelift for two years now and only laid out for tires, pads and annual services. Nice and comfortable car to drive I wouldn't of bought one with a smaller engine though but that's personal preference. Owned a mk1 mazda 3 before this and it was reliable only needing services but boring in comparison.

I have a 2008 TS2 2.0 petrol which I've owned for the last 4 years. No issues with reliability and only shelled out for servicing, tyres and brake pads. The 2.5 has around 25bhp more so not a huge difference in performance. Both engines are very reliable so I'd mainly concentrate on spec and condition. Since you're planning on keeping it for 5+ years I'd go for the mk2. The mk1 is 10+ years old now and known to rust badly on the rear arches.

Can't remember exact details but I've some experience of the mk3 - the standard engine is pretty gutless but the stage 2 remap is a completely different story (my brother owns the stage 2 so will try and get details later) overall not a bad car though.

The 2002 - 2007 Mazda 6 can suffer from rear arch rust:

I would buy the newer body shape if you can afford it.

I had a 2002 Mazda 6 which was nice, but as you say the arches rust, not just the rear mind, mine was starting to bubble on the fronts also.

Another issue i had was water in the sills, i had to remove the plastic covers from the bottom and loads poured out, when driving i could hear it sloshing around.

The clutch was also really heavy in my petrol one, a few i tested were the same, i wouldn't buy another for sure, while it was nice, you could probably find a better speced Mondeo for similar money.

Well, I went to look at another Mazda 6 yesterday... and bought it.

It's a 2008 2.5L SL Saloon in Copper Red Mica with 66,419 miles on it, with full main dealer service history up until December, with one previous owner.

Hasn't got a mark on the paintwork, lovely leather interior, automatic lights & wipers, BOSE stereo system, front and rear parking sensors.

Got it for £4395. Gonna collect it on Wednesday.

Hard to gauge how overpriced it was considering there's only 6 for sale in the country, and no others in Copper Red.
