Speccing out a machine for a friend.

Was looking at THIS board

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-128-GI

BUT, it seems it only does PCIE8x and 4x, so doesn't support any graphics cards.

can anyone reccomend something simillar (and not broken, so no ASUS offers please), with one single PCIE16 2.0 socket and a couple of PCIe1x and PCI sockets?

Seems really hard to find a board with ONE gfx socket.

BTW....LGA 775 and DDR2.

it says...

Graphics Interface: PCI-Express 2.0 (1x16/2x8)

so doesnt that mean it should suppport the graphics card of your choice?

:eek::eek::eek::eek::p

Of course it supports graphics cards it's one of the latest mboards! There are some single socket gfx card boards out there, Gigabyte just can't be arsed to release theirs  But Asus have.

It's badly worded then,

"dual PCI Express 2.0 x8 interfaces"
And....
"- Graphics Interface: PCI-Express 2.0 (1x16/2x8)
- 1x PCI-Express x4
- 3x PCI-Express x1
- 1x PCI"

No actual mention of any pcie16 socket you see.

Ah well, if it's just a duff description.

I was pankicking because decent cards don't run on anything but a 16 (8800GTS512 going into it).

Am i reading it correct, If so cards run at these speeds ........

1 card runs @ 16x
2 cards run @ 8x

To run 1 card, Use the Main Slot (light blue in pic on OcUK) that runs at x16 mate

Ciao

What board must one use to run 2 cards @ 16x? And if done so, would there be a conceivable difference between 2@16x and 2@8x?

Cheers

Lots of boards can do that, my ASUS M2n32WSPro can do it for example.

I dunnot about xfire boards, but SLI ones NEED 2x16 because 88nn's wont run on an 8x socket at all (according to the blurb anyway).

Before I commit to this board, does anyone have any hot tips on one that only has a single slot, PCIE2 at 16x?
(must be 775 DDR2, and preferably no ASUS/NVIDIA (I can't in good conscience build a box for someone else with kit that's recently burned my fingers to the bone, it'll be a LOOOOOoooOOOOooong time before I buy either an Asus board or an NV chipset again...they're like a Dr Who baddie....powerful but totally insane.)

At last they are in stock. Have ordered one but have seen no reviews about them yet. Gigabyte have a good name, guess you know that already.

SUPERB, good man!

The one I originally picked was basically that board, but with only 4 SATA ports, which kinda worried me.

Truth be told I should have bought that one (or it's nearest DDR3 relative) myself, as I've only recently grasped that it's the 3x PCIe16 sockets that made my board (and the strikerII before it) so cripplingly expensive.

The DS3L is probably one of the best value for money mobos atm.

And the X48T is decidedly not....although a darned sight cheaper and working than the Asus was.
I SUPPOSE 18 months from now with 8GB of DDR3 1600 and 3x 4870's in it, it'll seem like a smart purchase though ;)
(as will my fsckin 800W PSU.....the machine currently peaks at 410W, and the GTX burns more juice that the 4870 would).

This is all assuming I overcome my fear of both ATI AND multiGPU setups.

Still, this board we've picked here, is for a less bonkers system for a saner user with other things to spend his cash on.....as long as it runs WoW he couldn't care less.
