So basically I'm stuck for choice between the following:

  • nexus 7 about 200
  • galaxy tab 8.9 3G - 149
  • HP touchpad with android on it - around 100
  • Ainol flame - around 100

I think the nexus is probably the best out the lot but the Ainol has hdmi and micro sd. I'm also tempted by the Samsung tab for 3G. The Ainol also looks like it has good spec but I am put off by the build quality and un optimized software.

What shall I do?

Depends on what you want the tablet for IMO.

The HP Touchpad easily has the best build quality of the ones mentioned (on par with the original iPad IMO), but obviously adding external storage is more of a pain (you can use an OTG cable, but you will need to provide power (by means of a powered USB hub - I created a battery powered one for use with my touchpad) to whatever device you want to plug in.

The nexus 7's built quality is pretty bad for what is meant to be a decent branded tablet, and I'd not touch another Ainol again, no matter how cheap.

I've not used the Samsung to compare, but given how shoddy their phones are built I'd probably steer clear.

I've recently retired my HP touchpad by means of an iPad 3 WiFi & Cellular (£240!), as it was the only device I could find that was not a step-down in terms of build (and a step up in terms of screen quality), but I'll say this, nothing beats WebOS for day-to-day browsing and media, I hardly ever booted it into Android unless I specifically wanted to run a game or app that I couldn't get on WebOS. I even prefer WebOS to iOS, by a long way, for tablet use. It's gestures and multitasking are 2nd to none!

Same for the touchpad using a OTG cable. Although with 32gig I don't need it.

Beaten to it..
