Hi

Well here we go another person questioning a new build lol.

I rushed into this whilst serving out in Afghanistan Jan 2011, buying parts online ready to build once I returned home from the tour. This time I want to get it right.

I'm currently running with:
  • Cpu : Skt 1336 i7 965 extreme
  • MB : Asus rampage iii extreme
  • Cooler : Corsair H70
  • Ram : Corsair Memory Dominator GT 12GB DDR3 2000 Mhz CAS 9 DHX XMP
  • Graphics : Gainward gtx 590
  • PSU : Coolermaster 1200 gold
  • Case : Silverstone SST-FT02B-W
  • HD1 : OCZ bigfoot vertex 2 120gb
  • HD2 : WD Velociraptor 10000rpm 300gb
  • HD3 : 2x 1tb in Raid 0

I fancy an upgrade and then I can build my 11 yr old daughter a rig from the old parts,

I'm currently looking at :

  • CPU : Intel CPU Core i7 3770K
  • MB : Asus Sabertooth Z77
  • Ram : Corsair Memory Vengeance Low Profile Black 16GB DDR3 1600 MHz CAS 9 XMP Quad Channel Desktop

My questions are as follows:

Is this a step in the right direction?
Is the memory OK?
Will I see much difference from upgrading these parts?
Is there anything you lovely overclockers would recommend?
and finally,
Having never tried OCing before, other than Asus CPU up software, once I have built this new rig, who would be kind enough to hold my hand and guide me through my first steps into the OverClocking world?

Ladies and Gentlemen your help would be greatly appreciated.

Dave

Personally i would'nt upgrade anything in your rig. That is still a cracking rig. Haswell is out next year and will bring a new socket with it which is what i am waiting for before even thinking about upgrading.

There's plenty of guides around this forum for overclocking, just make sure you get a decent CPU cooler. But if you get stuck I'm sure there'll be plenty of people at hand to give you some help.

+1

i would just buy your daughter a seperate new computer. im assuming your daughter will be just web browsing / homework / watching films? could easily build a cheap computer that would do that and more.
