Ok guys, sorry to keep spamming these forums with stuff but building my new rig I don't want to mess up.

I have everything apart from the graphics card, the spec is in my signature. Now I was waiting for the ATI DX11 Graphics cards... However thinking about it I am not sure I should. As what happened in the past the DX10 cards were released then sometime later DX10 games came out and these cards struggled to run these DX10 games and I can see history repeating its self... What I was thinking of doing was holding out until say Doom 4 came out or something that I really wanted to play and if I struggled running it buy a DX11 card when they are a bit cheaper and for the time being buy a card to keep me going.

Do you think this is a good idea? If so can you help me with a few reccomendations

What would you recommend if I had

A)£200 to spend
B)£300 to spend
C)£400 to spend

This will be a huge upgrade for me as I am currently running a GTX 7800 256mb GFX.

Thanks all :)

me personally would get a ati 48701gb or 260gtx till the new ones drop. play anything at pretty much really high settings and wont cost the earth. wont lose muchmoney either if a suprise happens and they come out quicker than everyone thinks.

Like I said bit of a hardware noob. But also with DX11 around the corner, does it make the current cards redundant?
Thanks,

No. I remember when DX10 cards first came out. The number of available games that could actually take advantage of DX10 hardware could be counted on one hand. Even then the difference between DX10 and DX9 in those games at the time was barely noticeable. Things got better over time but it was a bit of a miss on launch.

I don't think game designers are going to try any harder this time round to switch from DX10 to 11 at first than they did last time. Why? Not everyone is going to switch over to DX11 cards the second they're out. Some might not even switch for months or at all if they're still satisfied with the performance they're getting from their current cards with DX10 (and lower) games.

A DX10 card isn't going to magically stop working the day DX11 cards come out either. They will still play DX11 games but obviously in DX10 mode so you will lose out on some of the more advance effects, that's all really.

If it was me in your shoes, I would buy a good DX10 card now as the prices are slowly falling and then get a DX11 card when games supporting it become more widely available. There's no point in paying a premium on a DX11 card on launch when there's no games available to actually make use of it. You will probably find that by the time more suitable games are around that the price of the card you bought will have dropped a fair bit and you will be disappointed.

Thanks for that [timko], I guess with that in mind I would be looking at keeping the graphics card for a year at least I reckon, with Nvidia not being able to release their DX11 card (supposedly until next year)

Aaaa, I keep getting drawn to http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-087-BG&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1324 the reviews for that are amazing and I think it would fit in with my other system specs very well. Just a bit unsure, torn between the two I posted or one of the two Dg posted

Or maybe even http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-107-GW&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1324

Gah I hate building a new PC lol

Personally I would forget about DX11 games and concentrate more on the raw power of the DX11 cards. This is where they will shine. The new cards should give a nice boost to current games.

Thanks Asgard.

Still open for opinions, should I get one of the single PCB(think thats right!) 295s or wait for the DX11 card which if I am right in saying should out perform any card on the market currently?

Do you have an SLI or Crossfire motherboard? For example two GTX260s in SLI which can be had for very little money would be better than a single GTX295.

If you must get a new graphics card now here's what I would recommend at the following price points:

Sub £150 = HD4870 1GB

£150-£200 = HD 4890 1GB

Sub £250 HD4870X2.

It's not worth spending over £240 for a 4870X2 as the nVidia alternatives aren't good value for money at the moment.

The only GT200 series nVidia card that is decent value for money is the GTX260, and the 48701GB is still faster and cheaper than it.

For a ballance of performance and not too much money, I'd get a 4890 until the DX11 cards come out.

+1.

It was a lot closer before the latest round of price cuts.

Hi mate I do have SLI/xfire mobo. So 2 cards are better than 1? Interesting.

Yes and no, dual chip cards like the GTX295 and 4870X2 as well as the SLI and Crossfire setups do have their advantages when it comes to performance, but certain games have issues with them.

Checkout: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/buyers-guide/2009/06/02/what-hardware-should-i-buy/1

It's Junes edition but a good read.

It really does come down to price though, the GTX 275 896MB and the HD 4890 1GB are very close in performance terms, the 4870 1Gb and GTX260 55nm 216c are also very close, so it really comes down to what you can get the cheapest.

so something like http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-126-XF&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=939

with the spec in my signature will I be able to run every game out on the market at max and then just get the DX11 card next year when they are a bit better and maybe a little cheaper?

Yes, that's a very good buy one of the cheapest 4890s you can get and with an Crossfire motherboard, you could get another when prices come down for a great performance boost.

Ok thanks, so would 2 of them cards be better than 1 of these http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-094-GW&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1235 ?

Like I said my biggest thing with having the set up in my sig is I want to be able to run everything on the highest I can possibly run it. Ideally as cheap as possible as I will be getting a DX11 card next year ( if I get one of these cards) I don't want to get a game and have to lower things to medium etc due to frame rate issues, which is why I do not mind spending a bit out of the GFX card.

Cheers Speed,

if you had the money and you were given the choice

4870x2
or 2xthe 2 4890's I showed at the price is only £30 difference, I might not even go for the dx11 card next year, only if a game is out I like. Like I said I want this machine to last as long as possible.

Thanks (Bit nervous about going ATI never really been with them before -.-)

I can't say I'm going to make you feel any better, but I had a 4890 for a short while, wasn't that impressed and had issues with the drivers. But loads of people love Ati drivers so I guess it could have been a one off with my setup and the card I was coming from. It's also worth pointing out it was a bog standard 4890, not the newer ones and that there has been another driver release since.

If I wasn't a nVidia fan, I'd likely buy this, don't forget to use the OcUK free shipping offer if you meet the requirements to save a bit more cash:

Just make sure none of the games you play have issues with dual GPU cards, I seem to recall World of Warcraft does, but if that's been fixed or not I don't know.
