Hi all my dad doesn't think that getting a new graphics card would be worthwhile for me but I think it will be. I currently have an amd 7970 and an i7 920 at 4 ghz (spec in sig).

I play my games at 2560 x 1440 and I can't max Gta 5 or Arma 3 and I think a 980ti will make things better, especially in gta considering arma is more cpu intensive.

My dad made a good point that upgrading my system to an x99 based one might be more of a benefit.

So who is right?
Thanks :)

For gaming, upgrading your gpu will show much more improvement than changing your cpu. Despite its age, the 920 is still pretty good for gaming.

Arma 3 is completely CPU dependant. I had a I7 920 @ 3.8Ghz, upgraded to a 6700k @ 4.7Ghz and it made a huge difference. That game loves high IPC from the CPU.

Thanks for the replies. I think I will drive down to ocuk today and get one, or just do the sensible thing and get it delivered. Impatience is a terrible thing! Am I right in thinking that I need to have the latest motherboard bios for the graphics card to be detected?

I ran an i5 750 with a 980TI for a few months and it was great. It was a much bigger improvement coming from a 7950, than buying a 6600k later.

Some games were a bit CPU limited though, like Far Cry 4.

It depends on the motherboard. My Asus didn't need an update but it exposed an unstable overclock.

I would replace the I7 920 with a Xeon X5650. Six cores should help in ARMA.

I would try that before going X99 any way.

Well I've just updated my bios to the latest version and I have lost my overclock. This wasn't a problem I thought as I had taken pictures of all the settings anyway. But unfortunately my computer doesn't want to boot with the overclock now. :(:(

I am a massive noob with overclocking so is there a really easy way of getting me to at least 3.6 ghz?

Well I have just installed a Zotac 980ti AMP edition into my computer and I am very impressed with it. I'm now reinstalling Windows 10 to make everything cleaner and the all I need to do is work on getting my overclock back to 4ghz.

Thanks for the recommendations for a great card!

good choice mate. enjoy it

ARMA3 uses a crap engine which is still bottlenecked by a single thread, which is laughable in 2015 when even Bethesda has modified the ancient Creation engine to support upto 6 to 8 threads reasonably well!

To be put in context,an overclocked Pentium G3258 can match overclocked Core i5 CPUs in the game, last time I checked.
