Help me put Mendel's discoveries into...

Something easy to understand.

Nicked this of wikipedia:

Through experimentation, Mendel discovered that one inheritable trait would invariably be dominant to its recessive alternative.

And cant put it into easy to understand english at the moment, feel awful and eye infection ect. ect.

Any help would be great,

Two alleles, one is Chuck Norris, the other isnt: Mendel discovered that Chucks domination was constant, and that the poor recessive ******** failed consistently.
 
There are two flowers which can fertilise each other. One is red, one is yellow.

Both are homozygous (eg the red flower has two alleles at the corresponding locus, R/R. The yellow flower has two different alleles at the corresponding locus, Y/Y)

When crossing the lines, all flowers are red. However, the geneotype of the alleles is R/Y. The R allele is dominant over the Y allele.

When these R/Y plants (F1 hybrids) are crossed to form F2 hybrids, 75% of the flowers will be Red, and 1/4 of the flowers will be yellow.

R/Y x R/Y:

RR
RY
RY
YY

Only one of these will give a yellow phenotype. All those with the R allele will be red. This confirms the R allele is dominant.

It's basically saying that one allele can be dominant over the other. I.e. If the allele for blue eyes was dominant over the allele for green eyes, and you had one of each allele then you would end up with blue eyes.

Most inherited physical traits will be either dominant or recessive, if both parents hold a recessive gene then it is likely that the offspring will exhibit that recessive trait, for example blue eyes. If one or both of the parents exhibit the dominant trait this will take presidence over the recessive, with one brown eyed parent offspring are more likely to inherit brown eyes than blue.
 
Each gene is a section of DNA that codes for a protein. The easiest way of looking at the dominance idea is to consider what happens when you have a gene that is mutated to code for a non-functioning protein/enzyme, say blue eyes (which is simply an absence of the normal brown pigment). This is the recessive allele.

The dominant allele codes for the normal functioning protein, and if it is present then a normal functioning protein can be produced, so only if you have 2 copies of the allele coding for the faulty protein will you exhibit that the recessive phenotype.
