HI. I've got Mandriva 2007 powerpack and a laptop ide hard disk which my BIOS can't find at all. says there's nothing htere.

Someone suggested i plug it into a usb enclosure and try it frm there. only problem is i don't know what to use or if there is a program to recover my data.

Can anyone recommend a method to me please? or any commands that i can try out. i'm a linux newbie but i can use the console and any comands you suggest.

The data was not deleted, the hard disk just stopped working one morning (said "operating system not found"), but im hoping that linux can save the day.

so did you have lnux on the drive or do you want to use linux to recover windows data?

Any other machines you could try the drive in, have you tried resetting the bios on the machine that recognizes it?

how did you for mat the partions NTFS,FAT32,Reiser or ext3 etc etc

cheers

The drive is from a windows laptop but can't remmeber if it was fat32 or NTFS.

I've tried puting it in my desktop computer and it didn;t recognise it in the bios.

I want to use linux to recover data from the windows drive basically.
thanks any help is appreciated!

I think that you're not gonna be able to do anything with it unless it is at least visibly present in the BIOS. Without the BIOS seeing it, there's no way I can see Linux (or Windows or any other OS) being able to know it's even present.

How essential is the data on the HDD? Essential enough to warrant using a data recovery company?

It would be helpfull if the bios could see the drive. However i have had very large drives in very old machines, the bios see the drive but reports it completely wrong but linux see the full size :) was on a p2 400 put in a 250gb ide drive.

Does the hardrive clunk when it's powered on? put your ear to it and see waht sounds it's making.

cheers
