My computer wouldn't boot so I installed Vista Beta on a separate partition.

I can now access all the files on my hard disk but how do I import all my Outlook Express emails, the folders, email address book. folders etc. :D

Recovering Outlook express files

Hi matey

I have recovered my files from Outlook before and having searched the internet, it seems a similar solution for express.

Make sure "show hidden files" is enabled under Vista.

Click the Start button, and then click Control Panel.
In the left pane of Control Panel, click Control Panel Home.
Click Appearance and Personalization.
Click Folder Options.
Click the View tab, click Show hidden files and folders, and then click OK.

Basically, Outlook Express stored all your personal data stuff in the following directory, where D: is your xp patition drive. Guessing its something like D: now since accessing from vista.
Your "username" may be either "administrator" or something like "stephen" so check both for files.

D:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data
Identities\(random string like {3B0FA092-2222-1111-A1B2-111A1AA1AAA11}
\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Your address book is a *.wab file. Have a search on the hard drive for this and it should come up somewhere.

You should have all your files now :-)

As an aside,

If you go back to xp, when u first open up outlook express configure it and it will create new files in the same locations. Close it, then copy your original files back in and it should work.

Hope this helps.

Thanks

If you mean .pst files then no, not directly. In order to import .pst files you need to get hold of Office 2007 and then import them though Outlook. After they're in there you can open the Vista Mail client and click import and it will grab all the mails from Outlook 2007. After that you can un-install Office 2007 again.

There's a free Office 2007 trial if you go on to Microsofts website.

Yes, Outlook Express emails CAN be imported into Vista Mail.

Thanks for that especially the bit about using trial version of Office 2007.

I like to keep all my old emails when updating my PC's. Theses always something I need to reference from my past :)

Cheers
