Ok, so my mate seems to think that he needs to waste money on over the top items for his new PC.

He uses his pc for gaming, and computer programming as we are doing Computing at uni.
He doesn't use it all that much for anything else, and when I told him he didn't need the Q6700 he said 'for video editing' which I'm sure is BS as he doesnt video edit, and not that much runs on quads.

Ok, this is his spec.

Asus Striker Extreme NF680i SLI, S 775, PCI-E (x16), DDR2 533/667/800, SATA II, SATA RAID, ATX
4GB (4x1GB) Corsair QuadX XMS2, DDR2 PC2-6400 (800)
l Core 2 Quad Q6700, S775, 2.66 GHz, 1066MHz FSB, Kentsfield Core, 8MB Cache, Retail
768Mb XFX 8800GTX PCI-E (x16), Mem 1800 MHz, GPU 575 MHz, 128 Streams, HDTV 2 x Dual Link DVI
3 x 500 Gb Seagate ST3500630AS Barracuda 7200.10, SATA300, 7200 rpm, 16MB Cache, 8.5 ms, NCQ
1000W Coolermaster Real Power Modular M1000 PSU - Very High End!
Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard, USB 1.1/2.0, Wired, Silver/Black
Logitech 931352-0914, MX518 Gaming Grade Optical Mouse, 1600dpi, PS2/USB 1.1/2.0, 5 Buttons, Black

He has a monitor, so that's fine, but he seems to think that he needs to get the best of everything, he also wants some pants cooler for the CPU and not the Sythe or Noctua.

Please can you lot set him right. He doesn't game in DX10 much, but will be getting Vista 64bit. I recon that the most he needs on the CPU is at Q6600, and for the PSU something like 520W Corsair or the one up from it.

-=EDIT=-
Oh and he needs a case...he likes the armour.

Q6700 is "meh" for the price it costs over the Q6600.

What's his budget, and is it just the base and OS he needs? :)

I'd probably say that for in his budget (at the lower end) end including the parts he likes and obviously wants to keep. He doesn't need more than a Q6600, and if he does he could just stick 300 mhz or so on it and be at the Q6700 :)

About the Zalman, I had one like that for my AM2 rig, and it was worse than the stock cooler...so I'm not too keen on them...but he does like lights and fancy looking things. :p

The cooler is really good, use one myself and I'm very pleased with it. It's flashy too, with a blue led fan so might be popular with yer mate :) If not though and you did want to change, there is loads around that price range that are great coolers such as the Tuniq Tower (but just remember to buy some thermal paste, Zalman didn't need any because it comes with some excellent Zalman stuff).

Cool, cheers, this should make him realise that he really doesn't need to spend as much as he is wanting to spend on all this stuff, that's the main aim.

Failed

sorry rob but u have failed

my budget is £1000 - £2000 but id prefer around £1500 - £1600

right, i want a pc to last me the next 3 - 4 years or so while im at uni
(im doing a computing course)

i plan on and more than likely will get a q6700 at 2.66 and overclock it to 2.8 - 3.0, i have the money so in my opinion i might as well get it.

i will run

Open Suse 10.2 (x64)
Microsoft XP Pro (x64)
Microsoft Vista (x64)

Lol.

The Q6700 is a waste of money, your paying £150 extra for an extra 266MHz.

The Q6600 will easily be able to reach 2.8 - 3GHz and beyond. Most of them reaching that on stock volts.

can't have been seated right my temps dropped signifcantly with this cooler over the stock fan.

IMO, nothing lasts 3-4 years in this line (i.e. to remain cutting-edge which you might want thanks to your 'career' choice).

Anyhow, how about...

Armour's out-of-stock :D

NB: New mobo chipsets, GFXs, possible CPUs, etc coming out around Nov/Dec ;)

this is a waste of time i have already made up my mind

Tell us what you are going to order then and we can laugh at you.

Sorry but you want advice and we are giving it to you but your just not having it.

Whats the point in asking for advice if your not going to take on anything onboard?

The problem is he doesn't want advice, I keep telling him what is more sensible, and giving him advice, but he likes to ignore it.

I guess even asking you lot was pointless, sorry lads. I was hoping that others saying the same thing as me might get through to him, obviously not.

-=EDIT=-
And he plans on ordering what I listed in the first post.

I see i see. Shame that. :(:p

Mr Park, you will honestly get a much better spec if you take onboard what other people have to say.

For a start that motherboard is way overpriced for what it is. SLI is not a good investment at the moment anyway since not enough games take advantage of a SLI configuration. Plus the rest which im not going to bother going into if your not prepared to listen.

The power supply is an overkill and beyond, you will never use that amount of power. A Good quality 600 wattage power supply is plenty.

The Q6700 as mentioned is a waste of money. Just get the Q6600 and clock it up.

When your ready to listen just say and i will be happy to talk you through the individual parts properly, why you should get this over this etc... Until then though, well goodbye and enjoy your uber overkill machine.
