Hi all, hope this is posted in the right section??

I've got an idea for a setup I think would be of use to me, my work and when I go away. Hoping you guys can point me in the right direction, I am almost completely clueless when it comes to computer speak so keep it simple ;-)

Ok here goes, I've my old desktop and monitor still (needs a new motherboard I think) and a laptop (which is probably on it's last legs).
What I'm after is a setup using my desktop (obviously re-vamped) as a powerful base at home, then having a tablet 'of sorts' that will act as the monitor (when I'm home) but I'm also able to take away with me.
Think of it as an iPhone or iPod, you take it everywhere still able to use the functions etc and then when you return you put it into its' cradle and it syncs with the computer/laptop.

The monitor/tablet needs to have a USB port on it so I can use it with a external hard-drive. I've no idea what operating system to use, or preference.

I hope I haven't confused you guys, any help would be gratefully received.

I've seen the adverts for tablet/laptops but I'm not sure they have the power or functionality that I'm after.

Sounds like you want something like an MS Surface. It'd be helpful if you gave us an idea as to what you'll be using it for and what sort of applications you want to run though :)

Hi Nocky24,

I'm after something that'll give the power/speed of a desktop yet the flexibility of a tablet. I'm not to worried about storage from the tablet as long as it's got a USB port or two, I store all of my films, movies and photos on a portable hard-drive. As for apps, I'm a seafarer by trade and it would be useful to run the apps I usually run on my iPhone. I also enjoy playing simulator games when I have down time, Virtual Skipper etc. Plus it would be handy to be able to plug it in my bass guitar when I practise instead of dragging my amps everywhere.

Hope this helps :-/

I've got a laptop. And as much as it gives me everything i want it is a little bulky, a bit on the heavy side and the battery has given up. Plus I've uprated the RAM (I think it was the RAM) and now it overheats if it's not floating i.e. resting fan cover fully open on a book for instance.
