Help me select a GPU, to SLI or not?

I want to run two 1gb models in SLI, so which brand should I get? I want them to be quiet as possible!

I was initially going to get the eVGA 1gb Superclocked EE , but heard that it produces quiet a bit of noise?

My other choices are the MSI Cyclone, Gigabyte, or the Asus TOP.

Do you run them in SLI though? I heard that the Gigabyte has an issue in SLI because they are too close and heat each other up or something?

Yes. Go for a single powerful GPU rather than two middle-range GPUs. SLi and CrossFire, whilst pretty good these days, are not infallible. They also generate a lot of heat and use a lot of power.

Tbh you're best off waiting for the new ATi cards to launch in a month or so if you can.

special offer today,OC are doing their version for £330ish iirc

heat and noise are going to be relevant with a 480 regardless. They are built to run at that heat though so not to worry. Just be careful of buying a 480 that dumps the heat into your case. Make sure your case has good airlfow to exhaust the heat

Go for the MSI 1GB O'Ced Edition. I'm Running them in SLI runs every game perfectly. Even though Im running in this dual core processor and haven't had any issues with it. Very quiet and very good at performance.

Ok so I can stretch as far as a GTX 480, which one would be best, considering noise.

A 5870 is silent at idle, 480's are not worth considering if your sensitive to noise.
Also as others suggested you might be better off waiting for the new 6000 series, Barts should be almost as fast as a 5870 while being cheaper, and Cayman should be faster than the GTX480 while having lower power consumption and noise.

Barts will be slower than a 5870. Its the Cayman chips that will be replacing the 58xx cards.
The 6870 may well be faster than a 5850, but that's it. Remember that its their mid range chip, whereas Cypress was top end

Yes I know, the reason I suggested it was because it should be a fair bit faster than the original choice of the 460 and should be cheap. Of course if he wants the ultimate in performance he need to wait until November sometime for Cayman.
