Hi there,

I've been having an argument with one of the girls doing a Psychology BSc she claims that if she got an A in a psychology mid-term, it would be equivalent to say an A in a Math midterm.

this is not the case imo. If two people came to me for a job one with an A in Math and another with an A in psychology i wonder which id choose.

An A in math imply's to me that you are capable of learning anything, where as an A in psychology imply s your good at asking "and how do you feel about that"

opinions?

My opinion is that you're gutted because someone is devaluing your course :p

I'd take an Oxford psychology A over a Salford Uni maths A for the right job.

There's too many variables. It also depends on the job you want to do. Want to be a psycho-analyst? What good would a Maths qualification be?

BTW, are you American?

What are you studying?

If you think all psychology involves is asking people 'how do you feel about that' then I'm afraid you're sorely mistaken.

Some people are naturally better at some subjects than others.

I breezed through a maths degree with very minimal studying since for some reason I have always been really good at maths. I'm no good at foreign languages though whereas one of my friends is the complete opposite (great at languages but no good at maths)

Well born in england, moved here about 4 months ago :)

Sorry i just don't buy this. I really feel if you can get an A in math, you can do anything you want, an A in math suggests you can learn things easily, and store that information.

Psychology to me is a womens subject, in fact the whole course if full of girls except one gay.

If you're going for a job as a psychologist I would imagine the A-Level in psychology would be more valuable. Value is a very subjective term.

Clearly dont know much about Psychology if you think 'how do you feel about that' is all we do/study, get a clue first as to what the degree consists of before sterotyping. Thanks.

If you learn the material is pretty easy to get 100% in Maths, so an A is pretty easy to get.

By contrast Psychology and for that matter any art is extremely subjective, so to get high marks can be very difficult.

On the other hand if you don't study you can quite easily fail maths, but psychology you can blag your way through most of the time.

I agree with your friend - an A is an A.

I dont see which aspects of Psychology you can 'blag'. Especially at degree level.

I don't agree. Take a person who is autistic, for example. May be brilliant at numbers and might walk any mid-term you'll sit with no requirement for major studying, but might not be able to even begin to fathom interpersonal relationships.

Thats because it is full of soft skills. Skills a woman would usually be better at. That you don't understand it should be none of their concern :)

I don't know many people who fail Psychology exams. If you write something terrible you will get a D, you probably won't fail.

Lol, your post disproves what your saying for starters.

The fact that you can't understand the difference (narrow minded?) between the two subjects and what they offer would be something i'd hold against you should I be interviewing you for a role.

I have a mate who's good at maths - breezed it. I'm at uni at the moment studying computer science with him - and whilst he bombs through all the programming elements, I take him to pieces when it comes to writing reports/managing projects/presenting material.

Whilst maths is a very technical subject, those top notch at it will never be running the country ;)

Maths is macho and psychology is gay? :D

Psychology is the study of mental process and human behaviour. It isn't about head shrinking like people think. It's a complex subject, and no level of education on the subject will be as deep as human behaviour itself.

Well Psychology courses usually contain some maths - statistics.

Maths contains nothing other than maths.

For a broader range of knowledge, your employer would be more suited taking the psychologist. Unless your day to day job involved calculus ;)

Maths is macho...?!? Bwahahaha, I've never met any mathematician who is in the slightest bit macho. The closest they get to being macho is working out how fast they'd have to run away from the guy about to kick their head in.

Mind you, a few years ago I used to fancy Carol Vordermann, when she was less of a minger than she is now, of course.
