I'm having troubles with my new build and i don't know the source of the problem.

I built it at the end of October, P5Q Pro, Q6600 cpu, 4gig GEil black dragon ands Radeon HD4850, from the start it seemed slow and sluggish, but ever got round to finding out why. Anyway, i started getting hangs on my monitor, windows explorer would freeze whilst i was still able to use mozilla, so i put it down to vista and reinstalled it. After i reinstalled it, it wouldn't find my IDE hard drive where i keep my backups, then after restarts, my monitor wouldn't come out of standby, then at boot up when it did come out of standby, i'd get a message, please install a bootable hard drive or other bootable media, or something along those lines, vista wouldn't start.

So i took everything out except one HD, the one with vista installed, and my dvd rom and memory obviously, stuck my old GF 7600GT in, got vista reinstalled again and everything seemed fine, xcept sometimes when the monitor goes into standby, it wouldn't wake up again.

This morning, i stuck my HD4850 back in, and straight away on boot, i had red lines across my monitor which were flashing, and still the same old wake up problems. Stuck Geforce 7600GT back in this afternoon and been to work, missus has been using PC and she says it's been fine, but it was in standby and i culdn't get it out without a restart.

So, the culprits are either the motherboard, the HD4850 or i've been thinking it could even be a PSU problem, thing is though, i use a thermaltake TR2 500w and according to some website, my system with 1 HD should only be drawing 295w so it's not like the PSU is struggling.

I have started the RMA problem with my HD4850 as i think that may be the most likely, however, if no problem is found with it i'll get charged postage etc and still be at square one.

If there's anyone local to Middlesbrough that could possibly test the card for me that would be a help.

nobody any idea?

I've put my 4850 back in now and unplugged everything that is unnecessary, fans, half my memory, CDrom, all USB except kb/mouse and it's booted up fine so far, not tried to restatrt yet coz i daren't lol, only other thing i forgot to mention yesterday is when i go to shut windows down, instead of shutting down it restarts so i have to flick the switch at the back.

Can you get/read the specs for that PSU (should be printed on the side).

Other culprit could be the RAM. Maybe run Memtest (or the built in Vista one using installation disc)

Also, hope everything is installed firmly & not loose or disconnected, running latest drivers, Windows & BIOS firmware updates, etc

EDIT: In future don't flick the switch at the back, press & hold the power button till it goes off.

hmmm, now i've installed vista yet again and it's behaving as if nothing is wrong, i just don't get it lol, I was running on bare minimums, now i've connected all my fans back up, cd rom and installed my other memory and it seems fine so far, no hangs, no monitor not coming out of standby, nothing. Will see how this goes tonight though.
