Help me solve this bizarre BMW mystery...

Just curious if anyone else has experienced an issue like this...

My recently purchased car (2020 740d xDrive) has Bridgestone Potenza * S001 RFT's fitted all round on the 20" wheels. I can hear a constant high pitched humming sort of noise in the background, at roughly 20mph and above. It's fairly consistent regardless of speed but always noticeable. Changes a bit with road surface. Initial thoughts are wheel bearing or similar, but the noise remains if you steer left and right.

Brief chronology of events -
  • Took it to my local BMW dealer who have always been excellent, Master Technician came out with me, can hear the noise and agreed it's not right, booked it in for investigation.

  • Replaced the front nearside wheel bearing under warranty, noise still present.

  • They then replaced the front differential (!) under warranty and said it was sorted, but the noise was still present when I collected it. They've had it running when on the ramps and can't hear any unusual noises from the wheel bearings/transfer box/gearbox/etc.

  • Following this, they swapped the wheels for another set on Pirelli tyres (not sure exactly what wheels they used) and said it was much improved - but I wasn't able to check this myself.

  • Ultimately they've diagnosed it as tyre noise and said there's nothing more they can do.

  • I consulted a local BMW specialist I know well who came out with me and had a listen, he could hear it and agreed it could well be the tyres, but it's unusual.

  • Another local BMW dealer had a same age 730d (non-xDrive) on exactly the same wheels and tyres, went out in that, and I can hear what appears to be the same noise!

Looking online, I have been able to find similar experiences and comments about the S001's. I've not had them on a car before, it's usually P Zero's. So my ear seems to be picking up this very specific frequency, and it's very annoying.

They aren't particularly old tyres and have plenty of tread, so I'm currently planning on getting a new set of P Zero's or something fitted and selling them on, but can it definitely be the tyres?! Just seems so strange.

Sawtooth wear - happens on tyres with tread blocks that are perpendicular to the direction of travel. Happens a LOT on FWD cars like Golfs etc.
etc etc etc

We had this on one of the rear tyres on our fwd 2 series. Our local indy thought that the tyres shape might have been damaged and was affecting wear rate and noise.
It’s definitely quieter with a pair of Michelin PS4s in place.

Thanks - it certainly sounds like this, perhaps not helped by the S001s if they're more prone to making noise as a result.

One of the rears is definitely more worn than the other, this is from the recent health check BMW did:

can you localize the sound better with a smart phone in various positions (or someone in the boot) I tried that for a rear trailing arm bushing noise.

I get it on my Seat Ibiza there's a particular road on my commute where it's really bad and it did get worse when I had to replace my front passenger side tire after hitting a pothole so the other tires have approx. 3k miles more wear than that one.

It's not bad enough on most roads though for me to need to drop £lol on replacing nearly new tires though thankfully.

Not especially, it's quite faint and other noises would be picked up over it. It reminds me of a dodgy fan bearing, like you'd get on a PC fan, just humming away in the background... and yes, I've turned the car fans off and it's still there.

Ill bet its the tyres worn on the inner & the rubber gone hard if they are the origionals at 4 years old - we see this with Bridgestone's & Dunlops mainly.

In a car completely different in my previous ownership, I had sawtooth wear and the noise was incredibly annoying.

As well as the tyre swap, it would be worth getting a good quality wheel alignment done.
