Have a HTPC with 2 hard drives. one hard drive is split into 2 partitions, System and storage.
Installed XP onto system partition.
Few months later, bunged in Vista to try out Media centre, formatted system drive only and everything went smoothly for 30 days untill i had to activate and realised i preferred media portal to Media center so i put XP back on.
In one of those steps the 2nd partition became the system partition, but all the win folders were in the first partition.
So I got Windows 7 to try it out 7MC. Tried 32 bit, and it crashed during install. numerous efforts later I managed to get all the way into windows but the screen would randomly and instantly go black and I can't do anything and i have to do a hard reset.
Tried 64bit. No problems during install and hardware installation. But again after a bit of use screen would just go black.
I repeated both installs sometimes i maanged to get new drivers installed, sometimes i'd just leave the W7 ones. but in every case it crashed after a bit.
Just put XP back on and its perfect. no crashes, nothing.
I don't know if it would have an effect, but I'm completely deleting both partitions and starting totally fresh.
But what else should i be checking that could cause crashes in Win7 (64 and 32 bit) but not XP, bearing in mind i'd updated the drivers, and vista had worked previously with no problems.
