Hi guys,

It's come the time where i need to build myself a new rig, unfortunately i'm kinda out of the loop now a days.

I'm looking to build a rig that will last me a good long time mainly for gaming but also looking into the possibility of streaming and rendering video for YT and have around £2000 budget (dont need to go that high but can) I already have monitor keyboard etc so it is just the rig i need advice on.

so far i've been looking at:

mobo : Asus Rampage IV extreme black edition
CPU : i7 4930k extreme with corsair h100i water cooler
GPU : EVGA 780 ti SC ACX
PSU : 750W EVGA gold G2
RAM : 16gb Corsair Vengance DDR3 pc3 - 12800
SSD : corsair force series 3 240GB
Case : Thermaltake level 10 GT in black.

Any advice would be welcome, let me know if its overkill or any swaps you recommend.

Cheers guys

Hi

Going down the 1150 route would be a cheaper option. I would go for an i7 4790K and the Z97 Gigabyte Sniper board.

The 4930K is a beast of a cpu, but the 4790K should be plenty fast enough for your needs.

Have a look at the Crucial MX100 SSD's as they offer great value for money.

Your case is an interesting choice :) I don't think I have seen anyone with that case on here. It gets good reviews though, so if you like it then go for it.

You could up the psu to the 850W version of the G2. That would give you a bit more headroom if you want to sli.

Hi lee,

Cheers for the advise, one quick question though... I'm all for going down a cheaper route if its available but how would the other cpu and motherboard you suggested stand over time? My idea with stacking as much power as I can was to cut down on having to upgrade sooner rather than later.

Thanks again

I would expect that you would need to change the gpu before the cpu :)

The i7's are pretty futureproof I would say. The Sandybridge cpu's which released in 2011 are still very much on par with current cpu's. Not that it will last forever, but you get the idea :D

I know you can always stick another one in but I wouldn't be putting a 256gb ssd in something you're aiming to be future proof. Get a 512gb mx100 at least.

Can you wait until September? Haswell-e is coming with DDR4 etc and tha. Looks like the most future proof platform for the time being.

I hope what i am going to say doesn't sound insulting, personally, as i don't mean it that way; i just think you are looking at things in completely the wrong way.

Future-proof is a term i don't like. Its too vague, it relies on knowledge we don't have yet, assumptions and general guess work.

Like i say we don't know what games will come along in 2-3 years and what hardware it will use.

We also don't know what 'radical' improvements are coming from the hardware side either. We obviously know new CPU's and GPU will come out every 1-2 years, we do know DDR4 is on the way with Haswell-E and M.2 is becoming a big deal in the SSD sector. Apart from that we know very little.

Yes, you can wait for DDR4, but will it have any gaming improvements over DDR3? How much more will it cost (it will cost much more)... Will 4K be the norm in 2 years and will GPU's have caught up with the resolution.

Like i say, we just don't know, there are too many uncertainties.

We do know one thing though, What Current Hardware will allow you to run every game at Top FPS. Because (for me) it seems a bit stupid to pile £2k into a rig for it just to fall flat on its face in 3-5 years, just the same as a £1k rig would.

All im saying is; don't spend money on something that you won't NEED now..

I hope you don't mind if i go through you're proposed Spec.

Motherboard: Its a £360 motherboard with NO M.2 slot. I know they are new Tech but they may pave the future of our SSD use, more than SATAIII. I know its 'top of the range' but you won't use 75% of the extra features it has (which you are paying for), like 4-Way SLI, you need a dual loop system to run and cool those. There are also lots of High-end OCing and (i think) some LN2 hardware feautres. That is why its at that price.

CPU: Games don't currently benefit from The Intel Hex-core (12 virtual cores - AMD terms) CPU. While it won't affect the performance of the CPU, you are paying a lot more (nearly double what you would for a 4790k) for the chance that game will use those extra core (and HT) more in the future. While i think they will, i think CPU tech would have progress a lot more by that point for the 4930k to become nearly obsolete.

RAM: 8GB would do for gaming, though 16GB will help with image and video editing. The vengeance series isn't the big deal it used to be. There are many other brands doing better things.

Case: I think that'd be a bad investment, its all looks and no real 'performance'. You can get much better for much less money, like the 450d, 750d, 540 Air, FT02, RV04, H440.. and many more.

I think you should ge tthe best you can for you're money now and no worry about the future.

A rig like; 4790k, 16gb 2400mhz RAM, 780ti SLI (or R9 290 Xfire)... Something to that effect would be ideal.

I agree with doomspeed. Im waiting on my new rig and i went for the corsair 750d case, after a LOT of research it seemed like a solid choice for my needs. I would def not pay so much for a mobo and processor for the reasons above.
