Help me spec a gaming build at £700-£800

Hey guys, long time lurker, first time poster. While usually content to simply drooling over some of the hardware on show here, I've decided it's about time for a new system. Gaming, media consumption and general internet browsing are daily activities for my current home system. It's a Q8200 with 4GB of RAM and a HD4850 so I'm hoping a hard-ish budget of around £800 (I'm willing to stretch a little beyond that if it's really worth it but so close to Christmas with three kids to pay for every penny gets them closer to an orange in a sock come Christmas morning!) will buy me a significant upgrade and I can pass on the old rig to the little dude who's still rocking a single core system from years ago that starts smoking at the thought of Facebook games!

I already own a copy of Windows 7, so no OS is required. I also already have a monitor, mouse and keyboard I'm very happy with.

As for specs, that's where I'm hoping you wise gentlemen will come in. After lurking here for a good long while I have a fair idea about some parts I'm keen on, but not it all. I also have a few things I'd like to to see the system capable of, but I've no idea if it's possible while keeping the system on budget.

I'm not absolutely set on any of these parts, most of this is simply from reading threads on here every day for over a year. An i5 3750k seems to be a universal recommendation for a build of this nature at this price point, along with 8GB of RAM and the Twin Frozr III MSI 7850, although a more expensive Nvidia with all the bells and whistles they offer does appeal if it's financially viable. I don’t need an optical drive or HDD’s as I have those already (2 x 500GB), but an SSD as a primary drive would be great. Modular PSU’s seem to be a common recommendation, but I’m clueless when it comes to coolers and such so any and all advice is appreciated there. Finally, for the case I was keen on the Bitfenix Ghost for the last few weeks, but then I always seem to get swayed by whatever is new and shiny. However, a few reviews now have mentioned it’s quite plasticky and appears almost cheap so I’m not sure. I’m certainly interested to see what people would recommend. One thing however, I really liked the idea of the hotswap top bay in the Ghost. It’s definitely a feature I would make use of, right now I’m simply using a USB dock but having it built into the case is appealing. Not a dealbreaker though.

Hmmm, might also be worth mentioning it’s been around four years since I last built a system from scratch. Nothing much has really changed, has it?

Looking forward to reading your builds guys.

You guys are so awesome, I didn't see a way to fit a Sapphire 7950 into a prospective build on my budget, and then there it is! As I understand things, it's a great card for oc'ing and is better than the 660TI? Other than the card, the only other real sticking point for me has been the case. I'm a bit of a flip-flopper and the critical reception of the Ghost has me a little uneasy so I find myself searching through a myriad of other cases. The CM 690 II Dominator has certainly caught my eye, and seems to be on special so should I be jumping on that? Other than that, it all seems great.

See what I mean, flip-flopping like a fish out of water! I'm terrible.

Very close to pulling the trigger on this, or a very similar variant, just a few questions...

Others have suggested one of either the Sapphire or Twin Frozr III 7950. Could I swap out the 660TI for either of those cards effortlessly enough, or would the build need tweaking as a result?

Secondly, the same question, but with regards to the case. The more I read about the Ghost, the less keen I am, specifically with the talk of it's slight cheap, plastic feel and general flimsiness. Perhaps because it's on special for today only, I'm having my head turned by this...

Cooler Master CM-690 II Advanced USB3.0 Dominator Case - Black/White - £66.98

...which is actually slightly cheaper in price than the Ghost. Again, would I encounter problems in the build? Any tweaks to RJC's overall build required as a result?

Hoping to get it all sorted and ordered after dinner tonight.

You can swap the 660Ti out if you wish for the Twin Frozr III 7950 and the case out to the CM-690 II without causing any issues.

They are all compatible and will fit well, the PSU will have no problems either. :)

Damn my flip-floppiness! Prices and circumstances have changed a little, I left buying this until this morning and suddenly it's just not coming together on budget. So, I'm having to tweak it a little further again.

So I'm in the position of having to choose between these three gfx cards...

HIS HD 7950 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
MSI HD 7850 Power Edition Twin Frozr IV OC 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
MSI HD 7850 Twin Frozr III OC 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Cards

So, which do I go for? Bang for buck is the goal here, but I also don't want to pay more for a small performance increase if one of the 7850's are *almost* as good.

Oh, and rest assured that advice pending, this WILL be completed today. No more faffing about.

Bang for the buck for the cheaper MSI is great since it runs cool and quieter than any single fan edition when overclocked.

Either go the whole hog and get the 7950.

Or get a GTX660 - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-199-EA&groupid=701&catid=1914&subcat=2379

I would go all the way and get the 7950 if it's within your budget. It's faster than a GTX 660 Ti and the other cards you listed ;)
