Server only - as in, the game will be played on other PCs. I don't expect I'll need anything more than on-board graphics for this thing. It'll run Linux and will probably have a custom modpack with at least a few intensive mods, going up to around 80-100 in total at a guesstimate. Ideally I'd like a small footprint, and high single-core performance (since that's how MC rolls) with solid RAM, an SSD for the server and a storage drive for backups.

So, firstly, do you think the below would work? Secondly, do you think you could do better for less cash? I'll probably only use it for a few years at most, and it'll generally have 5-20 people on it, again at a guesstimate.

Higher Write a d read speeds are handy for a server Minecraft system

Little bit cheaper, same space, faster read and right , also different queue system

Though no native m.2 slot

Better warranty and smaller

In regards to mods ... Might want to sink an i3 8350k and clock it to 5ghz ? That or 8400 with its all core of 3.8ghz

Wouldn't renting a server be far, far better value that running one yourself? From my quick Google it looks like for your usage they shouldn't cost more than £15 per month, and the electricity cost for running your own is likely to exceed that alone!

Not if you want to have complete control!

Check your mods to see if they'll either use multithreading or will be run on a new thread to Minecraft's - as mentioned in link above

Can you explain the 8400 2.8GHz being selected ahead of the 8100 3.6GHz, considering Minecraft (and many of the major mods) just use the one core? Not sure if this is something I'm aware of, I was always told to go for single core speed above everything else when dealing with CPUs. Has that changed?

I should probably mention I probably won't be overclocking (I just don't trust myself with it :D).

Its been awhile since I ran Minecraft servers so a lot has probably changed but I noticed they used a LOT of RAM and could get quite funny after awhile without a bit of optimisation of how the system used RAM. Also saw a lot of spikes (not sure if it is still the same) when a new player joined with a massive upload spike of world data and a big, single thread, CPU hit during that period but a lot of the rest of the time CPU usage was quite low.

Boosts to 3.8ghz all cores . I5/7/9 base and Turbo are different from i3... Intel's poor PR

Single core boost 4ghz
