Hi everyone,

I work as a 3D designer and due to use upping the quality of our visuals. I've been given the green light to spec up a new machine that will be more powerful than my current PC to cut down on render times.

My current spec is:

CPU - Intel Xeon E5-1650v2 3.5GHz
RAM - 36GB
GFX - Quadro K4000
HDD - 1TB SSD

Now for budget.. well thats the thing, I did mention one machine that would cost £8k and my boss didnt bat an eye lid and said not a problem. So I'm thinking of a PC between £8 - £10k. That would be the whole tower and 2 monitors (Ideally 27"). As for windows our IT department will sort us out. THe reason I'm not using IT to spec this machine is that they just get off the shelf HP workstations which I dont rate.

So any tips for a good spec would be greatly appreciated. I'm guessing to go with dual xeons and dual GPUs if possible. I did read that somewhere I could maybe have something like a 1080ti in that could be for rendering and then a Quadro card for running the desktop, which means my PC wont be unresponsive while rendering.

I just need the BEST spec for cut down on render times.

Many Thanks,

Rich

Right now best thing would be wait little for what AMD is bringing to high end.

Ryzen brought heck a lot of bang per buck for multithreaded desktop work.
And up to 16 core ThreadRippers are coming in next weeks, likely at price of 10 core Intel.
Above that for (up to) dual CPU platforms AMD has Epyc with up to 32 core CPUs next in line.
