As the title states, a friend of mine is after upgrading his ancient system, he has a maximum budget of £400.

The machine will be used for gaming and not much else really.

He already has:

Case
PSU
HDD (although he may get a cheap SSD for the OS)

So really he needs Mobo, CPU, RAM and Graphics card.

Do your worst. ;)

This,

good spec by firefly

and i also agree with him on SSD, i'm after a SSD, could buy a 60GB one now but im going to save up for a decent 128 GB one or even 256gb ssd

What PSU does he have? Hopefully not a rubbish unbranded one.
The spec above looks good.
You will see a big improvement from a HDD to nearly any SSD, so I would personally go for a cheap last gen one. The biggest thing is the difference in reliability, but that's what the warranty is there for. 60GB is fine for OS and apps, 120gb just gives you some space for games as well. I just upgraded to a cheap 120GB vertex 2E and think it was definitely worth the £44 price tag for the extra responsiveness.

He has a good Antec 750w PSU, it was purchased earlier this year.

With regards to the SSD, its simply for the OS, so 60Gb will be ample i would have thought.

We need to know the PSU and the CASE.

I have spec'd the same as firefly in other threads. You get a good 3 year warranty on all the parts, RAM is limited lifetime warranty. The GB 7850 is clocked higher than it's close rivals and GB warranty is uk based which is nice.

Problem is if the case can't take a ATX sized mobo then the spec above is pointless. The wattage and brand of the PSU would be nice to know as well.
