Hello all,

I have a friend who knocked his PS3 off the table, and now it doesn't work, so he's given it to me to look at as I'm pretty tech savvy, although I've never seen one of these before.

When you plug it into the mains, the light is red, then when you press the power button, the light goes green and you can hear the fan start up.

After that, it will load discs, eject discs and beep 3 times when no disc is loaded.

It will not however, turn off, without unplugging it from the mains.

I've plugged the HDD into my desktop, thinking the fall could have damaged it, but it just shows as unallocated space in the Disk Manager. The PS3 displays the same behaviour outlined above with the HDD removed.

Does this sound like knackered hard drive, or something more sinister? What's next to check?

Cheers!

Nothing on the display screen at all?

Sounds like something inside is knackered; i.e. damaged PCB or so - probably worth opening up and taking a look unless you're planning to send it off for repair.

Nothing at all no.

It's past warranty so I'll be pulling it open at some point this week. Just wanted to check there wasn't a standard thing to look for (lights flashing, a reset button maybe).

It's wierd that the disc tray seems to work as expected, but nothing else will function. Seeing as the HDMI cable was plugged in when he knocked it off the table, I'm thinking maybe the socket has been damaged...
