Right. I'm stuck here at my mums trying to fix her PC which I bought off a friend a couple of months ago. Reliable chap, formatted and cleaned it up for us. Was working fine for the first couple of weeks but doesn't want to boot now. It turns on, but essentially I don't get any signal through to the monitor. A friend of my mums brought round a spare monitor to check it gets no picture, and it didn't. So we can rule out a dead monitor!

It turns on, no beeps, correct front lights flashin, all fans and gfx card working fine. There's a master Sata drive and a slave Ide. I couldn't feel if they were both spinning up inside the case so I took them out. Plugging them in one at a time and they both spin up ok. Interestingly, there's a cdrom and a dvd rom drive and neither of those seem to work- in that I can't eject either of them?

I did have problems with the Ram when I first hooked the pc up here, it wouldn't stop beeping I think because they were inserted in the wrong order (4 sticks). I'm not getting any indication that there is a ram problem now though..

I'm kinda struggling here, it's been a whole since I've messed around with any PCs!

Apologies for phone typing..

Hmn to be fair I don't 100 percent, although the fan is spinning. I'll have to see of there's a spare around here..!

look for the motherboard battery, power off pc and pop it out for 30 minutes, then put back in and power pc up

it will reset the cmos/bios

The mobo manual said 30secs so I've just tried that.. Same result. Interestingly I'm not getting good any hdd lights flashing at the front? Wouldn't they nornally flash to indicate activity on boot?

Thankfully I still have her old Dell here. Tried the gfx card from that but same result. It's not the gfxcard or monitor asr i just double checked the dell works- which it does ccomplete with pictures. Hmn.

Must be drive related?

Unfortunately I don't know which drive has the install of windows on it.

I have the following :

250gb Maxtor - Sata - no jumpers on back to indicate master/slave
500gb Hitachi - ide slave

So I'm assuming he would have had the Maxtor Sata as the windows drive..?

What would happen if I took out the Maxtor and set the Hitachi to master r?

I would've still thought that you would've seen the bios screen even if you had no hard drives plugged in, even with one plugged in you should see it.

This is weird. After some testing it seems the ide drive will only spin up when disconnected from the ide cable. Weird. The Sata seems to spin up regardless though..

After reading about drives not spinning up when connected to ide I'm now wondering if it's the mobo or psu. I can try the dell psu but I'm a bit wary..

Mobo is a Gigabyte GA-8ik1100..

Oh, I just realised I'm not getting any beeps at all.. That's not good is it..?

Quick update.. Tried the dell psu but same symptoms. Ide drive won't spin up when connected via ide, only when that's unplugged. No beeps at all on boot. Need to research more but it looks to be the mobo that is dead? What are the chances of getting a socket 478 nowadays?
