Help me understand what happened

I am honestly clueless here. I am running XP Pro SP2. No problems. I then need to install framework 3.5 because a program needed it. So I install it and reboot. When my PC starts back up nothing would load. Like not even MSN (set up for auto start with PC). Took about 5 minutes to load MSN. Internet adapter got disabled (when I went to network connections it just refused to open) and no programs would run (so could not use system restore).

I restart the PC about 4 times trying to find the boot mode key to go into safe mode and run system restore. Miraculously, my XP boots up perfectly on the 5th start. Everything working. So I load up system restore again and restore back to before the install and troubleshoot the problem I had.

So my PC reboots back up and then I am given errors from two applications. Catalyst Control Monitor supposedly crashes because of a kernel debugger problem and then my Daemon Tools says something along the lines of "you need to have atleast Windows 2k installed to run this program/SPTD".

So I load back up system restore and restore further back, same problem. I then restore back to after framework install and working perfectly.

What on earth happened? At first I thought I needed to upgrade to SP3 and then use framework but apparently that was not the issue.

I suppose it is not helped by the fact I never run windows update. :P

Strange. Cataylst Contol Center uses .NET so maybe the install/update didn't go right, messing up the previous .NET you had installed.

I don't know about the DAEMON Tools problem.

Sorry I can't be much help. Definitely update to Service Pack 3 as Service Pack 2 is out of service with no more updates support (but you knew this already).

There will be some .NET updates on Windows Update that fix known issues.
